The preliminary rosters for each of the teams playing in the 2015 World Juniors and there are three Halifax Mooseheads players among them. Mooseheads goaltender Zach Fucale is pretty much the only one that will be for sure playing at the tournament.
Fucale was one of two goaltenders named to the Team Canada prelim roster last week. He will play for his home country in front of his hometown fans. Canada will be joined by Finland, Germany, Slovakia and the United States in Group A competition held in Montreal. That camp begins on Thursday and it will contain two pre-competition games against Russia, Sweden and Switzerland.
If Herd fans are lucky we will see Fucale will be playing against Timo Meier and the Swiss on December 23. Meier, a second year forward for Halifax, was named to Team Switzerland over the weekend and will be trying to make the team for the first time at the U-20 level. Switzerland's camp opens on December 15. After helping promote the team last year, Nikolaj Ehlers will look to make Team Denmark for the second straight year and help them again. The Danes were the winners of the 2014 Division 1A World Juniors competition with a 5-0-0-0 record. They'll be playing to stay in the top division when they begin this year's comp with a game against Russia.
We'll have to wait until Christmas Day for the final rosters. How will the Mooseheads respond to having their top guns not in the lineup? Well the first test will be on Wednesday night when they welcome the Acadie-Bathurst Titan at home without their #1 goalie. I expect the other two will leave the team on Friday or Saturday. I'll release my world junior coverage on December 20 before the pre-comp games.
