Jan 28: Titan vs. Mooseheads preview

ACADIE-BATHURST TITAN VS HALIFAX MOOSEHEADS
Puck drops at 7:00pm
TV: Webcast | Radio: News 95.7 | Live: @HFXMooseheads
K.C. Irving Regional Centre

It's another battle of two lowly teams who are in the midst of a rebuild year as our Halifax Mooseheads travel to take on the Acadie-Bathurst Titan tonight. The Titan faithful haven't had much to cheer about when their team is on home ice as Bathurst has won just 5 of their 24 games at the KC Irving Regional Centre so far this season but that's more than the lone match they picked up a victory in last season. If you look at the standings, this should be an easy game for the Mooseheads but there isn't often easy games. Halifax comes into the mid-week match with a 14 game winning streak against Acadie-Bathurst and they'll be looking to continue that this evening. The Herd are coming off a blow out loss to the Moncton Wildcats over the weekend where they were shutout. Despite being new to the team, Kevin Gursoy and D'Artagnan Joly are now being called upon to be leaders for the young club and they'll need to keep doing what they've been doing on the scoresheet. Can Halifax finish off the month of January with a win? Follow along on News 95.7 or Twitter to find out.

Whynot Scores OT Winner

Rookie defenceman Cameron Whynot scored his second goal of the season and it was a big one as it was the game winner to give the Halifax Mooseheads a 4-3 OT victory over the Gatineau Olympiques on Thursday night. The game started out pretty even with shots tied at 11 in the first period but Zachary Dean recored his 12th goal with 94 seconds remaining in the frame to give Gatineau a 1-0 lead. It was Dean's fourth marker against the Herd this season after picking up a hat trick on Sunday afternoon. Alexandre David would score his 1st as a Moosehead past the midway point of the game to tie the game up for Halifax. The third period was exciting. Gatineau would once again take the lead less then 5 minutes into the final frame but 60 seconds later Kevin Gursoy extended his point streak with a goal. Gursoy picked up his 16th at the 10:07 mark and it was the Mooseheads' first lead of the match. A power play goal by Mathieu Bizier later in the third and a number of nice saves by Alexis Gravel would send the game to extra time. It looked like we were going to see a shootout before Whynot skated in with the puck and flipped it over the Olympqiues goaltender to give the home team the win.

Alumni to Participate in All-Star Game

Photo - Wikipedia
The National Hockey League all-star game is coming up this weekend and a couple of former Halifax Mooseheads forwards will be participating.

For the second straight year, Nathan Mackinnon of the Colorado Avalanche was voted the captain of the Central division. This will be his fourth all-star game in his career. MacKinnon is having a pretty good season once again, picking up 30 goals and 72 points in 49 games which leads the Avalanche in scoring. The 24 year old is twenty-six points away from hitting 500 career regular season points and could most likely reach it some time in the next few months.

Third year centre Nico Hischier was named to the Metropolitan division roster a week ago as an injury replacement. Teammate Kyle Palmieri was originally supposed to participate in the festivities but has an injured left foot. Hischier has been a bright spot on a mediocre New Jersey Devils club and is second in team scoring with 29 points. This is his first all-star appearance.

The 2020 NHL All-Star festivities kick off on Thursday and go until Sunday in St. Louis, MO. The actual game will be played on January 25.

Congratulations to both men on being named to the all-star rosters.

Gravel on Team of the Week

The QMJHL Team of the Week ending January 20, 2020 has a number of connections to Halifax.

Mooseheads goaltender Alexis Gravel was among the best six players in the past 7 days determined by the Q. The 19-year-old went 1-1 over the weekend as Halifax went on the road to Quebec for three games. He had a 2.43 goals against average and a 0.938 save percentage.

Former Herd forwards Benoit-Olivier Groulx of the Moncton Wildcats and Chicoutimi Sagueneens' Raphael Lavoie were also named to the team of the week, each with 5 points in two games played.

Halifax natives Luke Henman and Jarrett Baker were also on the team of the week.

Congratulations to all six players, especially our own Alex Gravel.

Centre Robert-Guertin (4,000) ~ Gatineau, QC

The Quebec road trip concludes for our Halifax Mooseheads as they head west to take on the Gatineau Olympiques in an early evening tilt. It is also the first game of a home and home between these two clubs. This match could have playoff implications as the teams are separated by only 4 points heading into today. Gatineau has been one of the hottest teams as of late, going 8-2-0-0 in their last 10 and winning three straight. Halifax is 1-1 on this trip, basically because of the very strong play of veteran goaltender Alexis Gravel who has stopped 33 and 43 shots in the previous two games. Marcel Barinka has scored in back to back games and the Mooseheads will be hoping that this is the start of some offence for the European. The new overage Herd players have been leading the charge since the Christmas break with D'Artagnan Holy, Denis Toner and Kevin Gursoy combining for 20 points in 9 games.

This is the first of two meetings between these two teams this season. Halifax was 2-0-0-0 against the Olympiques last season while Gatineau had a 0-2-0-0 record versus the Mooseheads. The last matchup was March 5, 2019 in Gatineau where Keith Getson scored the lone goal in a 1-0 victory for Halifax.

Overall records
Mooseheads: 17-22-2-1 = 37pts (5th in Maritimes division, 15th overall)
Olympiques: 15-24-3-0 = 33pts (4th in West division, 17th overall)

Gravel Solid But Herd Loose to Phoenix

Photo - Phoenix Facebook

Despite another huge solid effort by veteran goaltender Alexis Gravel on Saturday night, the Halifax Mooseheads could not get past the Sherbrooke Phoenix as they went down 4-2. Gravel made 43 saves to keep the game close especially in the second period where Halifax was outshot 20-6. Sherbrooke got their fans to their feet just over the midway point of the opening frame when Nathael Roy scored his 15th at the 11:22 mark. However, the Mooseheads would respond quickly as Marcel Barinka got the away team on the board and tied the game 40 seconds later. The Phoenix would take the lead in the middle frame but even with four power plays it was not until late in the period with Taro Jentzcsh picking up his 9th at even strength with less than 90 seconds remaining. The home team would extend their lead in the third but D'Artagnan Joly would give the Herd some life minutes later. It was too little too late though as Sherbrooke would push the lead to two goals once again as Samuel Poulin scored the insurance goal at the 14:18 mark.

Colisee Desjardins (3,420) ~ Victoriaville, QC

Our Halifax Mooseheads begin a three game road trip through the province of Quebec with a visit to Victoriaville to take on the Tigres tonight at 8pm Atlantic. There two teams are pretty evenly matched heading into the game, with both being close to the bottom of the standings. This weekend's road trip is a good time for Halifax to pick up some points as they'll also play 17th overall Gatineau on Sunday. The Herd are still trying to get some chemistry with all the new players and find themselves with a 2-8-0-0 record in their last 10 including loses in two straight. Victoriaville meanwhile is 0-3-1-0 lately and are led by Mikhail Abramov who has 51 points so far this season. Kevin Gursoy has taken over as the Mooseheads leading scorer and has played quite well since joining his new club last month.

This is the meeting between these two teams this season. Last year, Halifax was 1-1-0-0 against the Tigres while Victoriaville had a 1-1-0-0 record versus the Mooseheads. The two clubs met last on January 31 with Halifax coming away with the 7-5 victory on the back of Antoine Morand's 5 point night.

Overall records
Mooseheads: 16-21-2-1 = 35pts (5th in Maritimes division, 16th overall)
Tigres: 14-20-5-3 = 36pts (4th in Central division, 15th overall)

Kyte Commits to X

Photo - Mooseheads website
Saint Francis University coach Brad Peddle announced the first commitment for the upcoming season for the X-Men hockey team and it is former Halifax Mooseheads defenceman Patty Kyte.

The Pembroke, ON native is currently playing for the Chicoutimi Sagueneens after being traded in December. He played three seasons for the Mooseheads. Kyte has a number of family members who are alumni of StFX, including his father Murray who is the Vice President Advancement.

Peddle commented; "He is an excellent defenceman that plays a very well rounded two-way game. He is a tremendous skater who moves the puck very well, but is also very dependable in his own end."

Good luck to Patty with the X-Men next season.

Moose On CSS Mid-Term Rankings

The NHL Central Scouting Services announced their midterm rankings on Monday for the upcoming draft and two Halifax Mooseheads players are among the top 100 North American skaters. Defenceman Justin Barron was ranked 15th while forward Senna Peeters is 62nd which means he is projected to go in the second or third round.

Barron is currently out indefinitely with a blood clot but had four goals and 17 assists this season before his injury. The Halifax, NS native has a late 2001 birthday meaning he is one of the older eligible prospects. He was originally selected by the Herd in the first round of the 2017 QMJHL draft and made his debut for the team that September. Peeters, a 2019 CHL import draft pick by Halifax, is playing well in his rookie campaign recording 12 goals and 17 points in 34 games played in 2019-20. The 17-year-old is originally from Duerne, Belgium but recently received his Austrian citizenship and participated in the 2020 World Junior Hockey Championship - Division 1 tournament, helping Austria get a promotion to the top division for next year.

In the first 31 ranked players, there are eight Quebec Major Junior Hockey League players including Barron and top ranked Alexis Lafreniere of the Rimouski Oceanic. Lafreniere has been projected all season to be the 1st overall pick in the 2020 NHL draft which is to take place at the Bell Centre in Montreal, QC on June 26-27. The top 3 are rounded out by Quinton Byfield of the Sudbury Wolves and Erie Otters' Jamie Drysdale, both in the Ontario Hockey League.

Check back later in the season as we find out where our two players end up in the final rankings as well as which teams have drafted them.

QMJHL Names Scholastic POM

Every month, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League announces a Scholastic Player of the Month which recognises a player on each team with his performance on ice and in the classroom. The player is selected based on their school results, their implication, the school-hockey conciliation, their team spirit and their on-ice performances.

For your Halifax Mooseheads, Sonny Kabatay was named the Scholastic Player of the Month for December 2019. Kabatay recorded 4 assists in 9 games and was a plus-1 during the month.

TRADE: Deadline Day Moves

Photo - The Guardian
The Halifax Mooseheads have made an unsurprising trade on Monday morning as they traded Raphael Lavoie to the Chicoutimi Sagueneens. Halifax acquired four draft picks in the transaction; a first and second rounder in 2020 plus a 2021 2nd round pick and 2021 third.

Lavoie, a Chambly, QC native, was drafted by the Mooseheads in 2016 29th overall and has played all 3 and a half seasons so far with the club. He had almost a point per game with the Herd recording 189 points in 192 regular season games. The 19-year-old was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2019 NHL draft and won a gold medal with Team Canada last night during the 2020 World Juniors. He finishes his time with Halifax a plus-50 and with 136 penalty minutes.

Chicoutimi, with the addictions of Lavoie, Patrick Kyte and also recently acquired Dawson Mercer will be in town on Friday night to take on our Mooseheads.

Good luck to Raphael in Chicoutimi! You were always a fan favourite and will be missed in Moose Country.

Halifax also announced that they have acquired Alexandre David from the Acadie-Bathurst Titan in exchange for Cole Stewart and a 2021 5th round draft pick. Stewart leaves the Mooseheads having suited up for 69 regular season games with the team and recording 12 points.

Good luck Cole with Bathurst.

McIsaac, Lavoie Win Gold With Canada

Jared McIsaac (#14) celebrates a goal with his teammates
Photo - QMJHL Twitter
Raphael Lavoie and Jared McIsaac will come back home as gold medalists. Team Canada had a comeback game in the third period to defeat Team Russia in the final match of the 2020 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships on Sunday evening (afternoon for Maritimers). The two teams were scoreless after 20 minutes but before long, Russia had a 2-1 lead after the second period. Charlottetown Islanders forward Nikita Alexandrov got the Russians on the board first while Dylan Cozens of the Lethbridge Hurricanes scored less than 90 seconds later to tie the game. The white, red and blue took a 3-1 lead at the 8:46 minute mark of the third period before Canada made their comeback. The Canadians scored three goals in the final 11 minutes including a nice goal by Niagara IceDogs' Akil Thomas which ended up being the game winner as the red and white were victorious with a 4-3 result.

Jared McIsaac had a goal in a 7-2 victory against the Czech Republic in the final game of the preliminary round. The Truro, Nova Scotia native finished with a goal and 3 assists and a plus-4 rating. Raphael Lavoie had two assists during the tournament and a plus-2.

Former Mooseheads import draft pick Samuel Fagemo was the leading scorer of the tournament with 13 points and helped lead Sweden to a bronze medal. Andre Tourigny, who coached Halifax during the 2016-17 season, was an assistant coach for Canada.

Congratulations to Jared, Raphael and Team Canada on winning the championship game. We're very proud of you boys.

The tournament will be hosted by Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta for 2021 and will include Austria who were promoted after they went 4-1-0-0 in the Division 1A tournament before Christmas. Halifax Mooseheads rookie Senna Peeters helped lead them with three goals and 6 points in five games.

Herd End 6 Game Skid

Photo - Myles Dennis
The Halifax Mooseheads ended their six game losing streak on Saturday evening when they defeated the Acadie-Bathurst Titan 3-2. Halifax got on the board early, getting the first goal 33 seconds into the game on a deke by D'Artagnan Joly. The momentum changed around the half way mark of the first period and a hooking penalty gave Bathurst a chance to tie it up which they did from a goal by Remy Anglehart. In the second frame, the away team took the lead but with a few minutes remaining in the period the Mooseheads scored to send the clubs to their dressing rooms tied once again after 40 minutes. The whole game was physical with a few big hits including one by the stanchion and some shoving between Kyle Petten and Liam Kidney. Petten scored his first goal of the season to give Halifax the lead in the third period on the power play and they were able to keep it.

Jan 3: Mooseheads vs. Wildcats preview

HALIFAX MOOSEHEADS VS MONCTON WILDCATS
Puck drops at 7:00pm
TV: Webcast | Radio: News 95.7 | Live: @MC_MooseCountry
Scotiabank Centre (10,595) ~ Halifax, NS

You wouldn't know that our Halifax Mooseheads are big rivals with the Moncton Wildcats by the way they have come together over the trade period with the changing of a couple of players and possibly more after the weekend. Moncton is a title contender and have made plenty of moves the last few weeks to bolster their already strong roster, including two big trades that have brought Benoit-Olivier Groulx and Gabriel Fortier to the team. Former Mooseheads' captain Groulx was traded to the Wildcats before Christmas after he was cut from the World Junior team and had a good debut on NYE where he scored two goals and had an assist. The two clubs made another trade on Thursday afternoon as Halifax acquired 19-year-old Ozzie King. Halifax will have a tough time against the 3rd overall Cats tonight but will still be looking to break a five game losing streak. Both clubs will be without some key players this evening when they meet each other at the Scotiabank Centre, as Moncton is missing Alexander Khovanov while Raphael Lavoie and Jared McIsaac are still away at the World Juniors as well. It's the first game of 2020 so come out and get your weekend started with the Mooseheads.

This is the fourth time these two clubs have met this season. Halifax is 1-1-1-0 against the Wildcats while Moncton has a 2-1-0-0 record versus the Mooseheads. The last matchup was on November 23 in Moose Country where Maxim Trepanier led Halifax with a goal and an assist while Alex Gravel made 23 saves on 25 shots before being pulled in a 4-2 loss.

Overall records
Wildcats: 26-10-0-0 = 52pts (1st in Maritimes division, 3rd overall)
Mooseheads: 15-18-2-1 = 33pts (5th in Maritimes division, 15th overall)
