PLAYOFF GAME #4: at Quebec

PREVIEW
QUEBEC REMPARTS VS HALIFAX MOOSEHEADS
Game Four of Round One
Centre Videotron (18,259) ~ Quebec City, QC

Quebec leads series 2-1

QUEBEC - We have a series! Our Halifax Mooseheads are still down but they played a better game on Tuesday night and came away with a 3-1 victory in Quebec against the Remparts, who now lead the best-of-seven series 2 games to 1. Halifax will be looking to have the same effort tonight in Game 4 as they hope to force a match back here in Moose Country. After a one game suspension for a check from behind hit, Samuel Asselin returned to the Mooseheads lineup motivated and it seemed to spark the team as well. Raphael Lavoie continued his hot hand, scoring twice on Tuesday while Arnaud Durandeau picked up his 3rd goal of the playoffs. Game 3 was as close to a full healthy line that Halifax has had all season; Benoit-Olivier Groulx is out indefinitely with mononucleosis. It should be a good match once again.

PLAYOFF GAME #1: vs. Quebec

PREVIEW
HALIFAX MOOSEHEADS VS QUEBEC REMPARTS
Series tied 0-0
Scotiabank Centre (10,595) ~ Halifax, NS

HALIFAX - It's playoff time folks! The Halifax Mooseheads will begin this post-season on home ice after finishing first in the Eastern conference. Halifax won the Maritime division title for the first time since 2014 and will be looking to go deep into the playoffs. They'll take on the Quebec Remparts in the first round best-of-seven series. The Mooseheads will be hoping for some revenge as the Remparts won both meetings between the two clubs during the regular season including a 5-4 overtime match at the Scotiabank Centre back in early January. Halifax struggled a little bit down the stretch, losing to the 13th place Val-d'Or Foreurs after a loss to 1st overall Rouyn-Noranda and going to a shootout against the second worst team in the Q last Friday. But playoffs are a whole other beast and regular season records don't always mean much. No word on if the Herd will have a full lineup to begin the playoffs however Raphael Lavoie did skate during full practice the other day. Halifax is a dangerous team when they have their top line of Lavoie, Samuel Asselin and Antoine Morand together but if the injuries are still nagging the club, the rest of the team will have a big chance to stand up and produce. Come on down to the Scotiabank Centre and finish March break with a couple of weekend matches against former Montreal Canadiens star goaltender Patrick Roy, local boy Andrew Coxhead and the Quebec Remparts.

Three Former Mooseheads Win National Medals

Photo - UNB Hockey Twitter
The UNB Varsity Reds are national champions again!

Which means that Halifax Mooseheads alumni Matt Murphy and Randy Gazzola picked up some more hardware this past weekend. The University Cup was held in Lethbridge, Alberta with 8 teams vying for the gold medal. UNB received a spot in the national tournament after defeating the St. Francis Xavier X-Men in the Atlantic University Sport finals earlier this month to get the AUS trophy. Despite being runners-up, St. FX also earned a spot to play in Lethbridge.

University of New Brunswick went up against the Canada West playoff champions and #1 seed Alberta Golden Bears in the Gold Medal game on Sunday night and defeated them by a score of 4-2. Gazzola picked up an assist in the championship match.

This is the teams' 3rd University Cup title in the last 4 years and 8th in school history. The Reds won bronze last season on home ice in Fredericton.

Murphy still has two years of eligibility while this was Gazzola's last season in university hockey.

In the Bronze medal game, the X-Men defeated the Saskatchewan Huskies 5-1 to get third place in the tournament. Former Herd Blade Mann-Dixon did not play in the final game but it was only his rookie year in 2018-19. The 21-year-old played for Halifax for a season and a half from 2016-2018 after being traded by Charlottetown during the Christmas trade period.

Congratulations to all three boys.

Herd To Battle Remparts

The Halifax Mooseheads will take on the Quebec Remparts in the opening series of the 2019 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playoffs, which will be a 2-3-2 series format.

It took until the last day of the regular season for our Mooseheads to know who their first round opponent would be because the team could either finish 1st or 2nd in the Eastern conference depending on the results of Saturday's games. Despite losing in a shootout, Halifax was still able to get first place in the conference because Baie-Comeau were defeated as well but in regulation so the two teams tied in points. Halifax had the tie-breaker.

Quebec finished the regular season with a record of 27-28-7-6 for 67 points while Halifax finished with a record of 49-15-2-2 for 102 points.

The Remparts won both games during the regular season series between the two. Halifax was defeated handedly 6-2 on the road in October but picked up a point in a 4-3 overtime loss in January at the Scotiabank Centre.

Halifax will host the first two games as well as games 6 and 7, if necessary. Game 1 will be Friday March 22 with puck dropping at 7pm Atlantic time.

Single tickets for the first two home games will go on sale Tuesday morning at 11am. You can purchase them at select Superstore outlets, the Scotiabank Centre box office or by phone at (902)-451-1121.

Stay tuned to Moose Country for more playoff details and game previews.

Herd Get 1st in East Despite SO Loss

The Halifax Mooseheads have clinched first overall in the Eastern conference despite losing 3-2 in a shootout against the Charlottetown Islanders on Saturday evening, a game that was shown on national television. With the point and a Baie-Comeau loss, Halifax tied the Drakkar in points at 102 but because the Mooseheads have more regulation and overtime wins, our boys got tie-breaker. The home town crowd were brought to their feet less than two minutes into the game, which began late because of a special pre-game ceremony to honour the Mooseheads 20-year-old players, by graduating forward Keith Getson. Halifax extended their lead at the 7:30 mark on a goal by Justin Barron, who picked up his 9th of the season. It was an emotional game for both teams as everyone in the QMJHL were fighting for playoff positions, as a result there was a number of roughing calls and scrums. Charlottetown's Hunter Drew had Samuel Asselin's number all game, spearing the Herd's over-ager at least once possibly twice and when the two were in the penalty boxes would not stop chirping in Sam's direction. The Islanders seem to wake up some and decide that they didn't want to end in a spot that would not give them home ice as they outshot Halifax 21-11 in the middle frame, while receiving goals from Drew and Nikita Alexandrov. In the third, it was a goaltender show forcing the game to head to overtime. Halifax had a few chances in the extra frame to get the second point but in the end, we would see a shootout for the second straight night. Matthew Welsh, a native of Halifax, stopped all three shots he faced and Daniel Hardie scored for the Islanders to give them the two points and 4th in the Eastern conference.

Scotiabank Centre (10,595) ~ Halifax, NS

It all comes down to this. While both teams in today's matchup already have clinched spots in the playoffs, where exactly they will end in the standings will be determined based on the results of this evening's games around the league. A few positions are set in stone but there are no post-season matchups determined as there normally is by the last day. For our Halifax Mooseheads it's fan appreciation day as they take on the Charlottetown Islanders. The Herd will also be honouring their three 20 year olds this afternoon. Note the time, the match was originally scheduled for a 7pm start but Sportsnet announced this would be the last game on their CHL Saturday Showcase schedule meaning it is now a 4:30pm puck drop. There will be a sold-out crowd at the Scotiabank Centre, just the second of the year after last night's attendance was announced as 10,595. Matches between Charlottetown and the Moose this season have been close sometimes even though Halifax has won all but one against the Islanders. We should be in for a good one so check it out on television if you weren't able to get tickets.

This is the ninth and final game between these two teams this season. Halifax is 7-1-0-0 against the Islanders while Charlottetown has a 1-6-1-0 record versus the Mooseheads. The two met last a month ago on Sportsnet as well with Halifax taking a 3-0 win led by Raphael Lavoie who scored two goals.

Overall Records
Islanders: 39-21-4-3 = 85pts (6th overall, 2nd in Maritimes division)

Sea Dogs Force Extra Time

The 17th place Saint John Sea Dogs are fighting for a spot in the post-season and you could tell that they wanted the points as they took on the Halifax Mooseheads Friday night and forced extra time. Saint John got on the board first just over three minutes into the game and despite being outshot in the first period, the Sea Dogs played pretty well not allowing Halifax to dominate like they have in previous matches between these two teams. Arnaud Durandeau tied the game up at 1 at the 16:28 mark of the frame, that's how the first would end. The Mooseheads held a 3-1 lead mid-way through the second before the away team mounted a comeback. William Poirier scored on the power play and Nicholas Deakin-Poot evened the score late in the second. When Keith Getson picked up his 28th of the year it put the home team back in front and lifted the 10,595 fans to their feet as it looked like the Herd would skate away with a regulation victory. But Zachary Bouthillier, the Dogs goaltender, and local boy Brady Burns had something to say about that. Samuel Asselin took a four minutes high sticking penalty which allowed Saint John to get one past Cole McLaren and force overtime. The extra period solved nothing so the two clubs went to a shootout where Asselin redeemed himself by scoring the only goal in the penalty shot section.

Wild Game Against Moncton

The Halifax Mooseheads have the second most wins in a single season in franchise history after a wild comeback victory against the Moncton Wildcats on Wednesday night for their 48th win of 2018-19. Halifax controlled the play from the opening face-off but the Wildcats were the ones to get on the board first with Jonathan Aspirot shooting the puck through All Gravel's five-hole. Moncton took a 2-0 lead nine and a half minutes into the match, scoring another between the legs of Alex on their first two shots of the game. That's how the first period would end with the home team down a couple. The Mooseheads came out stronger in the middle frame and Arnaud Durandeau got the guys on the board with his 36th goal of the season 4:21 into the second. A scramble in front of overager Francis Leclerc led to a review to see if Halifax tied the game up and after a few minutes it was ruled a good goal. The Wildcats would retake the lead minutes later on the power play but the Herd weren't going away. Brock McLeod would make it a 3-3 game with 4:54 to go in the period before Benoit-Olivier Groulx gave the home team their first lead of the evening. In the third Gravel had to make some nice saves as the Cats pressured but they couldn't get through the 18-year-old goaltender again. An empty net goal by big BO would seal the deal.

It's the final week of the regular season in the QMJHL and our Halifax Mooseheads will finish it with a 3 game home-stand which begins tonight against the Moncton Wildcats. Halifax left a few points on the table during their road trip where they lost three of the five games including a close one to Val-d'Or and unfortunately were knocked out of 1st place in the Eastern conference. They'll look to end the year strong as they head into the playoffs. These two clubs could even potentially play each other in the post-season still depending on how the matches this week go. Moncton is where most people thought they would be this season, maybe a bit higher up which is because of a very good start that they weren't expected to have. The Wildcats are rolling now as well having won 6 of their last 10 games including being on a 4-0-1-1 streak currently. When the Mooseheads get their 48th victory of 2018-19, it will be the second most wins the club has had in one season just behind the 58 Halifax got n 2012-13.

This is the ninth and final meeting between these two teams this season. Halifax is 6-1-1-0 against the Wildcats while Moncton has a 2-5-1-0 record versus the Mooseheads. The lone Mooseheads regulation loss came on Saturday when Moncton took a 3-2 victory on home ice with Samuel Asselin and Arnaud Durandeau scored for Halifax.

Overall Records
Wildcats: 36-20-4-5 = 81pts (7th overall, 3rd in Maritimes division)
Mooseheads: 47-15-2-1 = 97pts (4th overall, 1st in Maritimes division)

Leading Scorers

Previous Games
Moncton is coming off a big 10-1 victory on Sunday evening against the Titan. Brady Pataki led the Wildcats with 2 goals and an assist while Francis Leclerc stopped 17 of Acadie-Bathurst's 18 shots.

Halifax is coming into the match with a 6-1 win on Sunday afternoon in Saint John. Arnaud Durandeau led the Mooseheads with 2 goals and an assist while Alex Gravel made 14 saves against the Sea Dogs.

Poll #21

We have just a few more games left in the regular season and while I'll be naming a couple more players to my Top Herd for the matches this weekend, I wanted to put this poll up now because we have some good contenders which I don't think will change. I've done this the last number of seasons asking you fans to vote who you think should be the overall Top Herd and it seems to be popular so I thought I would do it again. When I give a player this honour each game it's not always because they were the one that had the most points that match, I thought they were the best player on the ice.

Who should be the 2018-19 Moose Country's Top Herd of the season?

A: Antoine Morand
B: Raphael Lavoie
C: Alexis Gravel
D: Samuel Asselin
E: Other

You have until the end of the first round of the playoffs to cast your vote.

Harbour Station (6,603) ~ Saint John, NB

The Halifax Mooseheads play their last away game of the regular season this afternoon as they travel to Saint John and take on the Sea Dogs at Harbour Station. After winning eight straight, the Herd have been sliding a bit the past week losing 3 of 4 on this road trip. Halifax has had a great year against Saint John though and will be looking to continue that today. The Sea Dogs though will most likely be playing hard as they can still make the post-season. Saint John is one point behind 16th place Shawinigan for the final playoff spot after picking up victory the other day and the Cataractes losing 12 in a row. The Port City club can play some good hockey but being young is also a curse when you're going up against teams that have a lot of 19-year-olds on the roster. Saint John got a point against the Moose in the season opener but that is about as close a game the two teams would have this year.

This is the seventh meeting between these two teams this season. Halifax is 6-0-0-0 against the Sea Dogs while Saint John has a 5-1-0-0 record versus the Mooseheads. The last matchup was on February 23 where Halifax skated away with a 11-1 victory on home ice led by Benoit-Olivier Groulx who had a goal and 3 assists while Cole McLaren stopped 25 of the Sea Dogs 26 shots.

Overall Records
Mooseheads: 46-15-2-1 = 95pts (4th overall, 1st in Maritimes division)
Sea Dogs: 13-46-2-3 = 31pts (17th overall, 5th in Maritimes division)

Leading Scorers
SNB: Maxim Cajkovic 44pts (21G & 23A), Robbie Burt 34pts (15G & 19A), Benjamin Gagne 31pts (8G & 23A)

Previous Games
Halifax is coming off a 3-2 loss against the Wildcats on Saturday. Samuel Asselin and Arnaud Durandeau scored for the Mooseheads while Alex Gravel made 22 saves for the loss in Moncton.

Saint John is coming off a 5-1 victory over the Titan on Friday evening on home ice. Rookie John Lawrence led the Sea Dogs with 2 goals and an assist while Mark Grametbauer stopped 28 of Bathurst's 33 shots.

QMJHL Names Scholastic POM

Every month, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League announces a Scholastic Player of the Month which recognizes a player on each team with his performance on ice and in the classroom. The player is selected based on their school results, their implication, the school-hockey conciliation, their team spirit and their on-ice performances.

For your Halifax Mooseheads, Joel Bishop was named the Scholastic Player of the Month for February 2019. Bishop had 3 goals and 4 assists in 12 games played in February while also collecting 20 penalty minutes and was a plus-14

Quebec has not been nice to our Halifax Mooseheads so far on this road trip and the team will look to rebound from two straight losses when they take on the Gatineau Olympiques tonight. Halifax was defeated by the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies and Val-d'Or Foreurs over the weekend, the second one was unexpected. This will be the last matchup of the regular season against a team from the French province for the Mooseheads. The top line of Raphael Lavoie, Samuel Asselin and Antoine Morand have been quiet the last couple of games and hopefully a match against 13th place Gatineau will bring them back to life. Both goaltenders will be looking to bounce back as well, I'm not sure who will get the start but Alex Gravel was pulled in the match against the Huskies while Cole McLaren played in Sunday's game. The Olympiques are also on a losing skid, going 0-3-1-0 in their last 4 games.

This is the second and final match up against these two teams this season. Halifax is 1-0-0-0 against the Olympiques while Gatineau has a 0-1-0-0 record versus the Mooseheads. The last game was on February 15 where Halifax skated with a 7-2 victory on the back of Raphael Lavoie's 2 goals and two assists.

Overall Records
Mooseheads: 45-13-2-1 = 93pts (3rd overall, 1st in Maritimes division)
Olympiques: 22-34-4-2 = 50pts (13th overall, 2nd in West division)

Leading Scorers
GAT: Giodano Finoro 48pts (25G & 23A), Gabriel Bilodeau 47pts (11G & 36A), Metis Rollens 42pts (17G & 25A)

Previous Games
Halifax is coming off a 3-2 loss on the road in Val-d'Or on Sunday evening. Joel Bishop and Keith Getson scored for the Mooseheads while Cole McLaren stopped 26 of the Foreurs' 29 shots in the defeat.

Gatineau is coming off a 3-2 overtime loss against the Islanders on home ice Sunday afternoon. 20 year old Giordano Finoro scored for the Olympiques while Remi Poirier made 34 saves versus Charlottetown.

HALIFAX MOOSEHEADS VS ROUYN-NORANDA HUSKIES
March 2, 2019 at 8:00pm

TV: Webcast | Radio: News 95.7 | Live: @HFXMooseheads

The march to the playoffs has begun and even though most clubs have clinched their spot in the post-season, teams are still jockeying for positions. It's probably the biggest game of the season as your Halifax Mooseheads travel to Rouyn-Noranda and take on the Huskies tonight to begin a 5 game road trip. Rouyn-Noranda leads the QMJHL with 105 points and have won twenty-three straight games. Halifax will be looking to end that streak while continuing their own. The Herd have victories in their last eight games including 3 shutouts. Rouyn-Noranda has the top two goaltenders in the league with Samuel Harvey and Zachary Emond sitting 1st and 2nd in saves percentage and goals against average. Alex Gravel will have to be strong in net for his team to have a chance to get the victory tonight but either way it should be a good game and I'm sure Coach Vellieux is telling the boys to play a full 60 minutes as it seems like they haven't lately because they have been playing weaker teams. In their match on Wednesday, Halifax was penalized 3 times while they didn't draw any and in the end it cost them a shutout. The Mooseheads still have the best penalty kill in the league however. This is the last road trip for the Mooseheads during the regular season which will take them to two other Quebec cities plus Saint John and Moncton.

This is the second and final meeting between these two teams this season. Halifax is 0-1-0-0 against the Huskies while Rouyn-Noranda has a 1-0-0-0 record versus the Mooseheads. The last game was on January 13 in Halifax where the away team took a 5-4 victory, Keith Getson led the Mooseheads with a goal and assist while Alex Gravel stopped 33 of the Huskies shots for the loss.

Overall Records
Mooseheads: 45-12-2-1 = 93pts (3rd overall, 1st in Maritimes division)
Huskies: 52-7-0-1 = 105pts (1st overall, 1st in West division)

Leading Scorers
ROU: Peter Abbandonato 100pts (27G & 73A), Rafael Harvey-Pinard 75pts (34G & 41A), Alex Beaucage 73pts (36G & 37A)

Previous Games
Halifax is coming off a 6-1 victory on Wednesday against the Titan at the Scotiabank Centre. Arnaud Durandeau had 2 goals and 2 assists to lead the Mooseheads while Alex Gravel made 17 saves to pick up the win versus Acadie-Bathurst.

Rouyn-Noranda extended their win streak to 23 on Friday night as they defeated Drummondville on home ice 6-1. Peter Abbandonato added to his best season with another 4 assists to lead the Huskies while Samuel Harvey stopped 36 of the Voltigeurs 37 shots he faced for the victory.
