Scotiabank Centre (10,595) ~ Halifax, NS

It's the second game of the home and home series between your Halifax Mooseheads and the Saint John Sea Dogs. This happens to be the last matchup of the season between these two teams. On Thursday night, the Dogs came out on top in a goaltending battle in Saint John.  Mathieu Joseph and Joseph Veleno scored for the home team in the first game this week in a 2-0 loss for Halifax but Eric Brassard had a strong game, making 34 saves. Thursday was the 1st time that Kelly Bent and Bokondji Imama met since they fought back in December where Bent got 5 games and Imama was suspended for 20 games. The two didn't take long to settle their differences, squaring off just 3 and a half minutes into the game. Though they won't be making the playoffs this season, the Herd can play spoiler for other teams who are looking to get a good position in the standings so what kind of team will we see tonight?

Gadoury wins AUS award

Phil Gadoury

Former Halifax Mooseheads player Philippe Gadoury has been named the rookie of the year for the 2015-16 Atlantic University Sport hockey season. The AUS announced the winners for the men's awards this afternoon before the second round of the playoffs begin. Gadoury, a native of Montreal, played a season and a third with the Herd before joining the Dalhousie Tigers this season. The 5 foot 10 forward scored the most goals in the conference with 17, including 5 hat tricks. One of his prettiest ones was an overtime goal in the last game of the year against St. Francis Xavier (see below). His 23 points in 25 games was not enough to help the Tigers get to the playoffs. The 22 year old was also named to the all-rookie team.

Two other former Mooseheads were named to teams as well. Cole Harbour native Stephen MacAulay of the Saint Mary's Huskies was named to the second all-star team while his teammate Austyn Hardie, also a native of Montreal, got named to the all-rookie team with Gadoury.

Congratulations to the three former Moose players and good luck to Hardie & MacAulay in round 2.

Sorrentino, Defence Help Moose Win

In maybe one of the best game they've had all season, the Halifax Mooseheads defeated a team that was 9 points ahead of them while ending a 6 game losing streak. Kevin Resop had a great game, looking very strong in net the whole 60 minutes but also getting help from his defense. Even though the shots against were still kind of high, there were plenty that didn't get through and when they did Resop was there to stop them in a 5-1 victory over the Sherbrooke Phoenix. Forward Anthony Sorrentino got a few lucky stick touches as he scored his first career hat trick which included him tipping in two goals. The whole game you could tell that both teams wanted to end their losing streaks but Halifax native Evan Fitzpatrick wasn't as strong as his counterpart on Sunday evening. Sherbrooke did not look very pleased that they were down 2-1 after 20 minutes against a team lower than them in the standings, with the Phoenix trying to get the Herd in trouble. Sometimes it worked but a couple of times the away team shouldn't have tried to pick a fight with the home team, Dominik Blain taking down Nicolas Poulin being a good example.

Moynihan's Score but Connor Gets Victory

Danny Moynihan and Cavan Fitzgerald arrived in Moose Country facing their former club for the first time but they couldn't help the Shawinigan Cataractes beat the Halifax Mooseheads on Thursday night. For the second time this season, Halifax chased the opposing goaltender in the first period after scoring 3 goals on 7 shots despite Shawinigan controlling more of the play in the first 20 minutes. Danny Moynihan scored with 4:39 left to close the gap for Shawinigan to one goal but Mooseheads goalie Eric Brassard was zoned in once again and stopped some really nice shots. Brassard would go on to make 46 saves collecting his thirteenth win of the season. The game looked like it might get tied up in the last 10 minutes but with less than 2 to go, the Cataractes pulled their goalie and Halifax iced it with two empty net goals to send the fans home happy.
