Injury Bug Hitting Moose

Just like last season, the injury bug is hitting your Halifax Mooseheads hard. Unlike last year however, the team will not have to be without the players for too long.

The biggest losses have been on the defense. During home opening weekend your Mosoeheads played with an all rookie defense core because Austyn Hardie and Jessie Lussier were both out with injuries. Now it is shifting to the forwards.

Rookie Josh Fitzgerald began the season on the sidelines with a concussion that came from a pre-season game hit. Hardie on the other hand missed the first games because of a charley horse sustained during a practice before the season started. 20 year old vertern Lussier is out for 6-8 weeks (down to about 4-6 now) because of a broken wrist. Lussier suffered the injury in Halifax's season opener in Bathurst. During the Herd's hope game versus the Saint John Sea Dogs, Cavan Fitzgerald injured himself and is now out for eight weeks with a fractured patella (knee cap).

It was announced today that the Mooseheads will now be without forwards Sam Leblanc and Vincent Watt for a bit. Leblanc has an undisclosed lower body injury and will be out 3-6 weeks according to Chronicle Herald reporter Willy Palov. Watt is out day-to-day with what Palov called an upper body injury.

Expect a couple of new faces in the lineup when Halifax hosts the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies on Thursday night at Scotiabank Centre.

Not only have the Moose had to contend with injuries but players off at camps and suspensions as well in the first 3 weeks of the season. Matt Murphy, Zach Fucale, Danny Moynihan and Philippe Gadoury were away at NHL camps but are now back in the lineup. Gadoury was actually sent back shortly after NHl camps began as he failed the physical because of headaches. Kelly Bent was suspended for one game and missed the season opener. The Q also announced that Moynihan has been suspended and will miss Thursday's game.

SAINT JOHN: It was not a good night for your Halifax Mooseheads on Saturday night. The physical side of this new rivalry was in full force last night with the two teams collecting 62 penalty minutes. Saint John cruised to a big win in front of their home crowd, chasing Zach Fucale from the net in a 7-0 game. Fucale was pulled after the Sea Dogs' sixth goal that was scored by Justice Dundas. At least it was a much higher shooting game then Friday night.

The Chronicle Herald's recap: It was a forgettable night for the Halifax Mooseheads in Saint John on Saturday.

Metro Halifax's recapThis one wasn't pretty.

Station Nation's recap: The Saint John Sea Dogs (3-1-0-1) gave their faithful fans plenty to be excited about Saturday evening at Harbour Station with a most convincing 7-0 victory over the Halifax Mooseheads (2-3-1-0)

Can they make it two in a row? Well your Halifax Mooseheads will look to do just that against a team that they lost a 3-0 lead exactly a week ago. The return of Zach Fucale, Matt Murphy and Philippe Gadoury proved to be quite helpful last night with Gadoury scoring twice during the evening.

HALIFAX
: Philippe Gadoury came back to the Mooseheads with a statment. After spending the past two weeks sitting on the sidelines with a headache, the second year forward scored his first 2 goals of the season and added two assists. The re-occurrence of Gadoury, Matt Murphy and Zach Fucale proved to be helpful against a very physical Chicoutimi Sagueneens team. There was two line brawls during the 60 minute game plus lots of hits and even a slash to the back of Timo Meier's head. The Scotiabank Centre is officially minted.

The Chronicle Herald's recap: The return of three key players gave the Halifax Mooseheads the lift they needed Friday night at the Scotiabank Centre.

Metro Halifax's recap: Go, Gadoury, Go.

halifaxmooseheads.ca's recap: The return of Philippe Gadoury to the Halifax lineup paid off instantly as the 20-year-old forward scored two goals and added two assists in a 6-4 victory over Chicoutimi Saturday night at Scotiabank Place.

Your Halifax Mooseheads will look to get back on track this weekend after losing back to back games last week. Timo Meier

The National Hockey League released it's Central Scouting Services Players to Watch list today and two current Halifax Mooseheads players are on it.

The players are ranked in three different categories. 'A' players are ones who can be projected to go in the first round while 'B' players should go in the 2nd/3rd rounds. 'C' ranked players most likely will go in the 4th to 7th rounds.

Forwards Timo Meier and Connor Moynihan both received a 'B' rating on the list. Prospect defenseman John Marino also had a rating of 'B'.

Meier leads the Mooseheads with 3 goals and 7 points while Moynihan has 2 goals. Marino has a goal and an assist in 5 games with the USPHL South Shore Kings.

Along with Meier and Moynihan, 37 QMJHL players in total were named to the list. Only 5 were listed with an 'A' rating; Jakub Zboril, Callum Booth, Nicolas Roy, Filip Chlapik and Daniel Sprong.

HALIFAX: It was déjà vu during the Mooseheads home opener on Friday night. The visiting team was the same, there was another Kevin in net and the outcome was pretty much the same. A year ago, on September 12, Halifax opened the season with a game against the Moncton Wildcats and were shutout while backup Kevin Darveau let in 4 goals. Fast forward to last night, the Cats once again helped your Herd open the home part of the season and for the second year in a row Alex Dubeau held Halifax to 0 goals. Kevin Resop made some pretty nice saves when the team needed him to and gave the Moose a chance to get back in the game quite a few times but scoring disappeared.

The Chronicle Herald's recap: The Moncton Wildcats spoiled the party for the Halifax Mooseheads Friday night at the Scotiabank Centre.

Metro Halifax's recap: The Halifax Mooseheads got off to a slow start Friday night against the Moncton Wildcats, and never quite picked up the pace, losing 3-0 before a hometown crowd eager to see their young team take to the ice for the first time this season.

halifaxmooseheads.ca's recap: No doubt this was not the way the Mooseheads had hoped to open the home portion of the 2014-2015 QMJHL season with a 3-0 loss to the Moncton Wildcats at the newly minted Scotiabank Centre.

The Canadian Press' recap: Alex Dubeau made 29 saves as Moncton blanked Halifax.

Scotiabank Centre (10,595) ~ Halifax, NS

It's home opening weekend at the newly rebranded Scotiabank Centre and just like last season we begin it with a visit from the Moncton Wildcats. After a split last weekend, your Halifax Mooseheads will look to be better and should be with the additions of Danny Moynihan and Philippe Gadoury who are coming from NHL rookie camps. With the alst home opener win being in 2011 will the Herd be able to break that streak? Well they won't have the discration of hanging banners and a long ceremony to hold them up this season but with an inexperienced team it should be an interesting and exciting game. Inexperience might actually work to be in the team's favour this year as the whole team will want to show the fans in Moose Country that it isn't the rebuilding stage yet. We're going to ahve to wait and see but come out and be apart of the excitement. Moncton will be itching to ruin the home opener once again however.

Herd Word: Ehlers scores at Prospects tournament

EHLERS
Nikolaj Ehlers was in British Columbia over the weekend for a prospects tournament that included the Winnipeg Jets, the Vancouver Canucks, the Edmonton Oilers and the Calgary Flames. Ehlers only played in 2 of the three games. He had a goal in a 6-4 loss to the Flames on Friday. Sunday afternoon was a much better game where Nik scored two goals and recorded an assist in a 5-4 shootout win against Edmonton while also receiving a penalty.

LUSSIER
20 year old Jesse Lussier got hurt in the game against the Charlottetown Islanders and as such will have to have surgery on his broken wrist. The surgery will happen today and will be out for 6-8 weeks, it was announced today by the team.

RETURNED
Update: After scoring a goal this past weekend, Matt Murphy has been returned by the Ottawa Senators. This means he will not be attending the Sens main camp. Danny Moynihan has also been reassigned to the Mooseheads by the San Jose Sharks.Hali

MAIN CAMPS
The following current Mooseheads will attend main camps;
Nikolaj Ehlers - Winnipeg Jets from September 19th to 30th
Zach Fucale - Montreal Canadiens starting September 18th
Matt Murphy - Ottawa Senators beginning September 18th

INJURED
It sounds like Halifax has another player who is listed day to day because of injury. Philippe Gadoury did not participate in any of the Montreal Canadiens rookie camp because he did not pass the physical.

HOME OPENING WEEKEND
Hockey will finally be back at the Halifax Metro Centre or should I say Scotiabank Centre this weekend. The Herd will take on the Moncton Wildcats in yet another home opener this Friday at 7pm. The Saint John Sea Dogs will than be visiting Halifax on Saturday evening at 7pm. I will be tweeting during both games.

Jesse Lussier is out with a wrist injury which leaves a rookie defense core for tonight's game. The only players with any QMJHL experience before last night's game are Brandon Worthen and Cavan Fitzgerald who have played 5 and 3 games respectively. There's also a rookie in the nets and Kevin Resop will be looking to have a better game in Charlottetown than he did in Bathurst yesterday, not that last night was terrible.

Kelly Bent will be back in the lineup after sitting out on Friday night because of a one game suspension that happened while he was still a Saint John Sea Dog player last season. Bent's return will add another level of physicality to the Mooseheads line up as long as he and Brandon Vuic stay out of the penalty box. Can the boys bounce back when they take on the Charlottoetown Islanders tonight? We are going to have to wait but once again it will be an entertaining game and watch how this half rookie team fares.

BATHURST: It's going to be a different year. The Acadie-Bathurst played their first game in their new uniforms and in front of an almost sold out crowd, showed that teams can be different each year. Last season, your Halifax Mooseheads defeated the Titan 9 times out of nine games but got off to a very rough start this season. Titan Jacob Brennan back stopped his team to a 4-1 win and Christophe Boivin scored 2 goals against Mooseheads rookie goaltender Kevin Resop. Acadie-Bathurst got out to a 3-0 lead before captain Ryan Falkenham scored to break the shutout with less than 5 minutes left.

The Chronicle Herald's recap: The Halifax Mooseheads will have to wait at least one more day for their first win of the season.

Metro Halifax's recap: The Mooseheads were almost shut out by the Titan in their season opener on the road Friday night, but captain Ryan Falkenham stepped up late in the game to score Halifax's lone goal, his leadership providing a bright spot in a disappointing 4-1 loss to Bathurst.

A year ago today we opened the season at home raising two championship banners. This season, many analysts have your Halifax Mooseheads finishing in the middle of the QMJHL standings. With nine new faces on the team this season, it should make for a very interesting year.

Halifax will need to get off to a good start as to not put themselves in a hole but they will have to do it without some key players and even more inexperienced players in the lineup this weekend. Earlier this week, the Mooseheads called up goaltender Christopher Langlais, defenseman Brandon Worthen and forward Makail Parker. How will the new faces pan out? Well we will have to wait and see but their first test will be against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan tongiht. Former Herd player Andrew Ryan made the Titan roster this season after being traded in the summer but will not be in the lineup tonight as he is at Minnesota Wild camp.

Moose Attend Rookie Camps

Five current players will take part in National Hockey League camps which start this weekend. These players include Zach Fucale and Philippe Gadoury with the Montreal Canadiens as well as forwards Nikolaj Ehlers (Winnipeg Jets) and Daniel Moynihan (San Jose Sharks), with Matt Murphy attending Ottawa Senators camp.

The five players will be unavailable for this weekend's games in Bathurst and Charlottetown on Friday and Saturday. Fucale and Ehlers could possibly miss a couple of more weeks.

A couple of former Mooseheads will also be attending camps. Stefan Fournier will get another crack at showing the Canadiens he has what it takes to be at the next level, while Andrew Ryan as you know will be at Minnesota Wild camp. MacKenzie Weegar and Stephen MacAulay will be in the sunshine state attending Florida Panthers camp. Of course Jonathan Drouin is also in the sunshine state at the Tampa Bay Lightning rookie camp.

Good luck to all the players at camp.

Top 7 Games You Gotta Be At

We're less than a week away from the beginning of the regular season, lets take a look at the top 7, in my opinion, games that you should be at the Scotiabank Centre for.

#7   March 21, 2015
vs. Saint John Sea Dogs - 4pm
The last game of the season will be played against the Dogs. This could be any kind of game; one where Halifax is fighting for a playoff spot, or just a game to clean up some problems before the big test begins in the playoffs. It'll also be fan appreciation day!!

#6   October 5, 2014
vs. Val-d'Or Foreurs - 4pm
A Sunday afternoon rematch against the team that kicked the Mooseheads out of the 2014 playodd back in April. It could also be the first contest between these two teams that we don't see a Mantha/Drouin battle.

#6   January 9, 2015
vs. Gatineau Olympiqus - 7pm
The annual Teddy Bear Toss game is a great way to donate stuffed animals to kids who are not as fortuante and to see your Mooseheads take on another Quebec team that only comes to Moose Country once a year.

#5   December 31, 2014
vs. Charlottetown Islanders - 2pm
Before you go out and party to celebrate the end of the year, come watch the last Mooseheads game of 2014 as Halifax takes on the Islanders in a New Years Eve matinee.

#4   November 7, 2014
vs. Saint John Sea Dogs - 7pm
Last year it was the Moncton Wildcats that we saw a lot of during the annal events, this season it's Saint John. This one will be a night where we celebrate our Canadian Forces veterans as the boys will wear special Navy themed jerseys that will be auctioned off.

#3   October 10, 2014
vs. Charlottetown Islanders - 7pm
The 7th annual Pink in the Rink will be played on this date. The Scotiabank Centre will be a sea of pink during the third home game of October and it's all to support the Canadian Breast Cancer Society and research to find a cure for breast cancer. Make sure you wear pink.

#2   September 20, 2014
vs. Saint John Sea Dogs - 7pm
After the preseason competitions between these two teams and the Kelly Bent signing, this should be a very physical and exciting game. Saint John will most likely be our biggest rivals this season after Cape Breton.

#1 September 19, 2014
vs. Moncton Wildcats - 7pm
It's the home opener of course it would be on this list. This game will feature a few players who won't be here all year long but it should be fantastic and it's against the Wildcats which are always very interesting tough contests.

Note: times are subject to change without notice, check the blog for pregame previews for the offical times.

Falky named Captain

Well there you have it. Returning forward, Ryan Falkenham has been named the captain of your Halifax Mooseheads for the 2014-15 season. Falkenham is going into his fourth year with the team but missed most of last season with injuries in both his hips.

Sophomore Nikolaj Ehlers and veteran defenceman Austyn Hardie were named alternate captains this season by the team. Ehlers is coming of a sensational rookie year that led to him being drafted 9th overall by the Winnipeg Jets in the National Hockey League who signed the 18 year old to an entry level contract yesterday. Hardie is going in to his last season of junior hockey and the Herd will look to him quite a bit to lead the very young D core this season.

Congratulations to all three players.
