Twenty-Twelve done for Mooseheads

In the second part of the Battle of Nova Scotia home and home, the Halifax Mooseheads took the sweep this weekend with two 4-1 wins. Tonight's game was Halifax's annual Battle of NS event where both teams wore special Nova Scotia themed jerseys. It was a very physical game but ended with not very many penalties. There were no penalties in the second period. Alcalde was thrown out only 10 minutes into the game after a fight with one of the Cape Breton players. Before the fight, Liam hit another CB player which led to the fight. In the third period the Moose thought they had scored a third goal but it had rung off the post. However seconds later, Falkenham did score to put Halifax up 3-1. Brent Andrews and Dominic Beauchemin were the other scores for the home team while Bronson Beaton scored for the Screaming Eagles.

Notes: 20 of the special blue Moosehead jerseys were then raffled off and proceeds went to the IWK... The Mooseheads have now won 17 in a row at home this season and are the second team in the Canadian Hockey League to reach 31 wins for the season, London was first after winning tonight as well while also winning their 23rd in a row... 4,600 fans travelled down from Cape Breton to watch the game...

Dec 29: Cape Breton vs. Mooseheads game preview

The annual Battle of NS event for the Mooseheads is being played tonight between the Screaming Eagles and the Herd. Tonight's game is the second in as many nights between these two teams, as they played each other yesterday in the other annual Battle of NS event held in Cape Breton. Halifax has won the previous four match ups, not including last night's game, and all have been pretty close games. Halifax opened their season in Sydney on September 21 winning an overtime game 4-3 and won again at Centre 200 on December 4th by a score of 5-3. The two games played in Halifax were some of the most exciting games of the season, with the Screaming Eagles forcing a shootout on September 29th and a 4-2 Mooseheads win on November 23rd.
The Mooseheads have outscored their opponents 45-29 while going 8-1-1-0 in their last 10 games. Cape Breton has gone 2-6-1-1 in their last 10 and are 4-11-0-3 on the road this season. Konrad Abeltshauser returns to the line up after missing 11 games, while Cape Breton will be without 3 of their players.

MacKinnon and Drouin on Team Canada

December 21, 2012 (the world did not end!! :D)
Last Thursday (Dec 13), Nathan and Jonathan were named to the Canadian junior team that is set to play against the world's best under 20 year olds from the top 10 hockey countries. The tournament is set to start on Boxing Day and run to January 5, 2013. This post will keep you updated on Nate and Jo and the rest of Team Canada as they try to bring the gold back to hockey's birthplace.

Last night, the team played Team Finland in a pre-tournament game which took place in Helsinki, Finland. The Fins took the game by a score of 3-2. Scorers for Canada were Mark Scheifele and Griffin Reinhart. Team Canada was assessed 9 minor penalties during the game and allowed the first 2 Finland goals on two different 5-on-3 penalty kills. The Canadians were also outshot 22-15 and were without SJ Sea Dogs scorer Jonathan Huberdeau for the game as he was serving the last game of a four game suspension. The Red and White will now play Sweden in their second pre-tourney game tomorrow at 9am ET.

December 22, 2012
Drouin scores!! In the last pre-tournament game today, Canada played Sweden. Team Canada won the game in a shoot out with Nugent-Hopkins and Huberdeau scoring in the penalty shot portion of extra hockey. Mooseheads own Jonathan Drouin scored in regular time in the 2-1 SO win for Team Canada. Nathan MacKinnon also got on the score sheet with an assist on Jo's goal.

Boone Jenner was ejected from the game with a hit that left Sweden player Jesper Pettersson on the ice for a few minutes. He was then taken off the ice on a stretcher. Jenner will now face disciplinary action from the IIHF, who will decide what should happen later in the week.

Canada will now travel to Russia to start the games that count on Boxing Day. They will play Germany at 4:30am/et.

Team Canada vs. Germany

After one period the score was 2-1 for Canada as 2 goals were scored on the power play during the 20 minutes for the red and white. Ouellett and Nugent-Hopkins scored for Canada. More production in second period. At the end of two periods, Canada now leads the Germans 7-3 with goals from Rattie, Scheifele (2), Huberdeau and Strome. MacKinnon and Drouin both got an assist in the period. Nugent-Hopkins now has 5 points through two periods (one goal, 4 assists).

Two more goals for team Canada as Drouin and Wotherspoon scored during the third. Shots were 46 to 28 for Canada. Team Canada did not take any penalties in the last 20 minutes either. Coach Spott said he wanted the team to be disciplined and take no more then 4 minors and I would say they did that. They also sang the Canadian anthem and presented the players of the game.

Moose break a record

Your Halifax Mooseheads were playing the Acadie-Bathurst Titan tonight and won 4-3 through 60 minutes of play. The Moose have now broken a franchise home wins record with 16 straight home games won this season. The red, green and gold had tied the record last night with a win against the PEI Rocket. The record was first set in the 1995-1996 QMJHL season, which was Halifax's second season in the league.

With this win the Mooseheads are now 16-1-0-0 at home this season and have an overall record of 27-3-1-1 for 56 points, good enough for first in the Maritimes division, first in the Q and a ranking of #1 in the country.

PEI figure out defense card

The PEI Rocket have finally figured out how to play defence this season against the league's leading goals scored team, the Halifax Mooseheads. Though the shots indicate differently (35-29 Moose), the team who will next year be called the Islanders, finally limited the red and green to 3 goals after 3 games played this season allowing 7.33 goals/game. In Halifax's record tying 15 straight home win of the season, the home team won 3-1 without their star players Nate, Jo and Marty.

Notes: Beauchemin was credited with 2 goals tonight... MacKinnon, Drouin, Frk and Abeltshauser were all not in the lineup and won't be in tomorrow's game either... Konrad missed his 6th straight game with a wrist injury...

Moose WIN an odd one on Friday

Tonights game was an odd one. The Moose scored the first 2 goals of the game (on their first 2 shots of the game) to lead it 2-0 at the end of one. The Sags got on the board early in the second with a goal by Asselin. After the Sags goal, Halifax just kept on rolling to a 7-1 win. Chicoutimi changed goalies 11:06 in to the second period after the Herd's 4th goal... The Sagueneens outshot the Moose by a 2:1 ratio but were losing 4-1 (shots 22-11) by this point. #22 got his 22nd goal of the season and 2nd of the night on pretty much a breakaway.

This is the second time this season that the Sags have visited Moose Country and it is also the second season meeting between these two teams. The Mooseheads come into the game with a 12 game home winning streak and a 7-2-0-1 record in their last 10 games overall, while Chicoutimi is 8-2-0-0 in their last 10. Halifax also posts the best home record in the CHL with 12 (straight) wins and one loss, which came in the home opener. Around the CHL ~ volume #1 preview edition #1

This is kind of late but here is my 'preview' of this season around the CHL. Enjoy the rest of the season. Please share and comment on my blog posts. I'll hopefully post an "Around the CHL" once a month no promises though. Hopefully after the success of last year, the Mooseheads can not only go deep into the playoffs but win the President's Cup trophy and the Memorial Cup.

here are last year's leaders:

Division champions 2011-12
WHL - Edmonton Oil Kings (Central) 72 games played, 50-15-3-4 record, 107 points, 310 goals for/193 goals against; Tri-City Americans (U.S.) 72 games played, 50-18-2-2 record, 104 points, 281 goals for/190 goals against; Kamloops Blazers (B.C.) 72 games played, 47-20-2-3 record, 99 points, 290 goals for/211 goals against; Moose Jaw Warriors (East) 72 games played, 45-19-6-2 record, 98 points, 258 goals for/213 goals against

QMJHL - Saint John Sea Dogs (Maritimes) 68 games played, 50-15-0-3 record, 103 points, 298 goals for/180 goals against; Shawinigan Cataractes (Telus East) 68 games played, 45-16-3-4 record, 97 points, 274 goals for/179 goals against; Blainville-Boisbraind Armada (Telus West) 68 games played, 40-22-4-2 record, 86 points, 258 goals for/219 goals against

Memorial Cup 2012

SHAWINIGAN CATARACTES WIN 2012 MEMORIAL CUP!!!

Team changes
The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors of the Ontario Hockey League were renamed the Mississauga Steelheads. The Sherbrooke Phoenix joined the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League as a reincarnation of the Lewiston Maineiacs.

Shawinigan will look to repeat as Memorial Cup champions. This year the Memorial Cup will be held in Saskatoon, home of the Saskatoon Blades who will be in the tournament no matter what. Teams should be as strong as last year, as the NHL is locked out which means that many teams get to keep their 2012 drafted players. This list includes Sarnia (Nail Yakupov), Saint John (Jonathan Huberdeau), Moose Jaw (Morgan Reilly), Halifax (Marty Frk) and Barrie (Mark Scheifele). Prospects will look to continue impressing scouts as some will be eligible to be invited to World Junior camps in early December and hopefully play starting on Boxing Day. The 2013 CHL/NHL Top Prospects game will be held January 16 in Halifax, which will feature 40 of the most impressive prospects for the upcoming draft in June.
Other teams that look to continue their success of last year are Saint John, Halifax, Edmonton, London, Blainville, and Portland. Seth Jones of Portland and Nathan MacKinnon of Halifax will most likely be fighting it out all season to be drafted first overall in this year's entry draft in Newark, New Jersey.
