Just think, a little over a month ago the Mooseheads couldn't string two wins together. In the past month they've had 2 two game win streaks and are on a four game victory streak right now. Halifax will be looking to continue their strong play this evening when they visit the Foreurs in Val-d'Or. The Herd will be playing a team that is 3 points behind them this time but Zach Fucale will have to be excellent today if Halifax hopes to win. Val-d'Or is third in team scoring with 107 goals for, behind Rimouski and Moncton but they have the most goals against in the league. Can Halifax finish off the month of November strong with another victory? We will have to wait and see.

This is the second and last meeting between the Moose and Val-d'Or this season. The Foreurs won the last one on October 5 with a 4-3 shootout victory. Danny Moynihan had 2 goals to lead Halifax in the defeat while Zach Fucale made 33 saves to take the loss.

Overall Records
Mooseheads: 13-12-2-1 = 29 points (4th in Maritimes division, 13th overall)
Foreurs: 11-14-1-3 = 26 points (6th in West division, 15th overall)

Halifax is coming off a big 8-5 comeback victory over the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies last night in Rouyn-Noranda. Nikolaj Ehlers had 4 goals and 2 assists to lead the comeback for the Mooseheads while Zach Fucale made 18 saves for the win.

Val-d'Or is coming off a huge 11-1 defeat at the hands of the Victoriaville Tigres on home ice last night. Stephen Anderson scored the only goal for the Foreurs while Etienne Montpetit and Keven Bouchard made 26 saves on 37 shots.

RECAP: Ehlers Leads Moose Comeback

ROUYN-NORANDA - Like normal, when the Halifax Mooseheads are down Nikolaj Ehlers scores at the right time to get them back in the game and sometimes leads the team to victory. Your Moosheads were down 2-0 to the hometown Rouyn-Noranda Huskies after 20 minutes but surmounted an amazing comeback on the back of Ehlers' 6 points night to win 8-5. The win give Halifax 4 straight victories and for the first time all year they are above .500 with a 13-12-2-1 record now.

It was a back and forth game in the second period. Danny Moynihan's goal at 17:31 of the middle frame tied the game at 3 but Antoine Waked scored less than 2 minutes later to give the Huskies a 4-3 lead after 40 minutes. Nikolaj Ehlers scored his second of the night 7 seconds into the last period to tie it at 4 and than both teams had a goal disallowed. Andrew Shewfelt gave the Mooseheads their first lead with 7:23 to go and Nikolaj Ehlers would help the team never look back.

Can we officially say they have connected as a team? I would say yes we can. The Mooseheads may not be as dominate as they have been the past two seasons but they still got some power. Halifax welcomed the league's best last weekend and chased their starting goaltender on their way to a 8-2 victory over the Rimouski Oceanic. That explosive game started the Herd's first three game win streak of the season. They'll be looking to continue their strong play against a team that is only 3 points ahead of them. Rouyn-Noranda is on top of a group of four teams that has 30 points.

This is the second and last match up between these two teams this season. The Huskies won the last meeting back at the beginning of October. Alexandre Fortin and Antoine Waked had a goal and an assist each to lead Rouyn-Noranda to a 5-0 win on the road.

Overall Records
Mooseheads: 12-12-2-1 = 27 points (4th in Maritimes division, 13th overall)
Huskies: 14-11-2-0 = 30 points (3rd in West division, 8th overall)

Fucale Closing On Record

Not only was it a big night for import players Nikolaj Ehlers and Timo Meier in Halifax's 6-3 victory on Thursday night in Shawinigan but it was for 4th year goaltender Zachary Fucale as well. Fucale, who has helped lead the Mooseheads to a Memorial Cup championship and to two straight President's Cup finals appearances, is closing on to the record for most QMJHL career wins by a goaltender.

Zach is now in sole posession of second place on the list after recording his 124th victory last night against the Cataractes while making 32 saves in a 6-3 win. With it, he is now only 18 wins away from tying Jacques Cloutier for the record. Cloutier recorded 142 victories in 4 seasons with the Trois-Rivieres Draveurs between 1976 and 1980. Fucale and the Mooseheads have 41 more games this season so it is possible for him to acheive the record but some are saying that it won't happen. It is expected that Fucale will be a goaltender for Team Canada at the upcoming World Juniors so he will miss about 8 games because of that and of course a few here or there in the new year to let Kevin Resop get some more playing time.

Do you think Zach will reach the record this season? There's a slight possibilty of him returning for a fifth season next year but it's unlikely.

Congratulations on getting your 124th vitory Zach. Keep them coming!!

RECAP: Three!

SHAWINIGAN - Timo Meier is proving to NHL scouts that he should be drafted in the upcoming draft and tonight was the biggest showing in this young-ish season. Meier scored four goals in 60 minutes against the Shawinigan Cataractes to lead the Mooseheads to a 6-3 win in the Shawi. His fourth goal at 3:51 of the third period matched his goal total from the 2013-14 season of 17. The win gives Halifax its 3rd straight victory. The Moose now have a .500 record on the season and have scored 18 goals over the win streak. Halifax got out to a 3-0 lead less than 7 minutes into the second period. The team seems to be clicking now and they are playing confident hockey which is translating into success on the powerplay as well.

Moose Make Call Ups

The Halifax Mooseheads announced today that they have made 3 calls ups for this weekends Quebec road trip. With Connor Moynihan out for 2 games due to a suspension and the Mooseheads missing another five due to injuries, there is some open roster spots for a few games. Coach Dom Ducharme announced that defenceman Domenico Argento and forwards Tristin Tardif and Dominik Blain-Dupuis will be in the lineup for tonight's game. After tonight, the Mooseheads will have 11 players who have made their QMJHL debut this season.

It might not be a happy Thanksgiving for Connor Moynihan who will be serving his first game of a 2 game suspension tonight when the Halifax Mooseheads take on the hometown Shawinigan Cataractes but it is for the Herd who are on a two game win streak. Halifax will be looking to keep it going but with injuries piling up and facing a team that has also won 6 of their last 10 games, the Mooseheads will be in tough this evening on the road. Shawinigan on the other hand will be hoping to pass division rival Victoriaville Tigres in the standings with a win and even get a bit more breathing room from the Moose. Don't expect this game to be as feisty as the last two. The Cataractes and Mooseheads are in the middle of the pack in penalty minutes and they also see each other only a couple of times a season.

This is the first of two meetings this season between the two teams. Shawinigan and Halifax met twice last year with the Herd coming out with both wins including a 7-1 victory at the Metro Centre back in late February.

Ehlers named 2nd star

It's Monday which means another unveiling of the QMJHL stars of the week. A Halifax Mooseheads player was listed after the team collected two weekend wins against a couple of really good teams.

Nikolaj Ehlers, the Danish superstar that was drafted 9th overall in the 2014 NHL draft, was named 2nd star of the week for the week of November 17-23. Ehlers picked up a goal and 3 assists in the Mooseheads 8-2 win over the league's best Rimouski Oceanic on Saturday. He followed that performance with the game winner and an assist in Halifax's 4-3 victory over the Moncton Wildcats. He finished the week with a plus-4 rating.

The QMJHL named Adam Erne of the Quebec Remparts the first star while Anthony Richard of the Val-d'Or Foreurs was named the third star.

Congratulations to Nikolaj!

Winning November

My monthly stats post will be posted in 6 days but I thought I would let you know an interesting fact. It looks like things are turning up for your Halifax Mooseheads. The team got it's first two game win streak at the beginning of this month and are coming off another one this past weekend. We had them a lot the past two seasons but for the first time this season, the Mooseheads will have a winning record during a month. No matter what happens on the Quebec road trip on the weekend, Halifax will have more wins than regulation losses. The team is 6-2-1-0 record for the month of November with three games remaining. With the help of Saturday night's 8-2 win and a couple of 5-4 games, the Herd have scored 34 goals this month, the most they have in a month all season.

Check back on here for the gameday post on Thursday when your Halifax Mooseheads take on the Shawinigan Cataractes on the road.

RECAP: Holding On

HALIFAX - For the second night in a row, your Halifax Mooseheads chased the visiting starting goaltender from the net but this time had a harder time holding on to get the victory. The Mooseheads came out firing tonight scoring 4 goals on their first 5 shots in the first period against Moncton. The Wildcats scored the first goal but Halifax was able to score 2 minutes later and took a 4-1 lead into the second period. The four goal output chased goaltender Jason Rioux after 12 minutes of play. Alex Dubeau came in as a replacement and once again stoned the Mooseheads. Halifax has had a tricky time getting pucks past Dubeau the last two seasons when the two teams play each other. Despite Dubeau not letting in a goal by the home team, the boys in front of him couldn't solve Zach Fucale enough times to overcome the 4 goal first period only getting as close as 4-3.

It was another feisty game this evening with another 3 fights breaking out including a line brawl. Frustration was boiling over for both teams with a total of 25 infractions being handed out by the end of the game. Connor Moynihan received an aggressor penalty that started the line brawl and will get an automatic one game suspension. Surprisingly, the Wildcats were unable to tie the game up with the resulting 5 minute powerplay in the middle of the third period. Kelly Bent had a fight for the second game in a row as well, he actually had 2 this evening.

Your Halifax Mooseheads have another tough test this evening on home ice. They'll be going up against a team that is 2nd in the Maritimes division and playing pretty good hockey of late. After going up against the league's best last night and dominating the scoreboard how will the Herd respond today hosting the Moncton Wildcats. Some people will say the home team should kill the visiting team today too but a lot of fans will know that every game can have a different result than expected. The Wildcats will have their Russian duo back in the lineup and they'll be hungry to have a rebound game against Halifax.

This is the fourth game of the season between Moncton and the Mooseheads. Halifax is 1-1-1-0 against the Cats this season. The two teams played on November 8 last with Stephen Johnson scoring a hat trick for Moncton to give them a 5-4 overtime win.

RECAP: Score, Score, Score

HALIFAX - Against the league leading, according to the Mooseheads, Rimouski Oceanic your Halifax Mooseheads blew up the scoreboard on Saturday night at the Scotiabank Centre. Timo Meier and Sam Leblanc scored twice in a game that was supposed to end the other way around. The whole game you could not tell that these two teams only play each other two times a season. Each team showed a bit of fiestiness against the other and both were able to capitalize on the man advantage. There was at least 4 real fights and a few more scrums throughout the game including Olivier Tremblay punching Nikolaj Ehlers in the face with his blocker after they got tangled together. Ehlers was in a fight as well, getting kind of creamed by Anthony DeLuca toward the end of the second period which gave him a Gordie Howe hat trick.

It's been one week since most of your Halifax Mooseheads have played a hockey game. Zach Fucale played for Team QMJHL on Tuesday night picking up a big victory with 40 saves. Your Halifax Mooseheads will be hoping he can do that again tonight when they welcome the second overall team in points, the Rimouski Oceanic to the Scotiabank Centre. Russia Wins 2014 Super Series

Two days after winning a pivotal game 5 to close the points gap, Team QMJHL was unable to win the 2014 Subway Super Series losing on Thursday night 3-2 to Team Russia. The victory gave Russia it's third Series title, winning 11-7 in points.

Subway Super Series logo
via theqnews.net
The Q made it a game scoring it's second goal of the third period at 12:31 but the damage had already been done earlier in the game with Russia taking a 3-0 lead going into the last 20 minutes. Igor Shestyorkin stood tall in the last few minutes of the game when the QMJHL were pressing hard to tie the game up and force overtime. Once again, Team QMJHL had a period where they only had one shot (second period) but the team led the shots category last night in Rimouski, with 27 shots to Russia's 21 overall.

Halifax Mooseheads goaltender did not play in this second QMJHL-Russia game. Instead, Philippe Desrosiers of the Game 6 hosts Rimouski Oceanic made the start.

Moose on November's Player to Watch

The National Hockey League's Central Scouting Services announced their Players to Watch for November. The list includes draft eligible players from North American clubs and international teams. Two current Halifax Mooseheads players were ranked once again this month.

Each player is given a rating. 'A' players indicates a 1st round canditate, 'B' players are 2nd and 3rd round canditate while 'C' players indicate members who likely will go in the 4th, 5th or 6th round.

Swiss forward Timo meier jumped to an 'A' ranking in Novemebr up from a 'B' ranking in October while American forward Connor Moynihan dropped from a 'B' rating last month to a 'C' rating. Mooseheads prospect John Marino was again ranked 'B' on the list.

Meier still leads the Herd in points with 11 goals and 16 assists in 24 games played this season. He's showing real charater and promise this year trying to show he deserves to be drafted in the NHL.

Moynihan has 3 points (2G & 1A) in 19 games played. Marino, a defenceman, has 2 goals and 11 points in 22 games played for the USPHL's South Shore Kings.

Saint John and Charlottetown have the most players ranked this month with 5 each. There is a total of 46 QMJHL players ranked with 7 listed with an 'A' ranking.

Fucale Makes 40 Saves in Win

It's not very often you need to make 22 saves in one period but that is what current Halifax Mooseheads goaltender Zachary Fucale had to do last night in Bathurst, NB. Fucale was in the New Brunswick town as part of Team QMJHL for the Subway Super Series between the Q and the Russian junior team. The Quebec team was able to get out to a 3-0 lead 25:33 into the game on Tuesday night. After 2 periods, it was 3-1 QMHJL over Russia with shots close at 19-17 in favour of Russia. QMJHL decided to sit back and protect their lead instead of attacking the Russian net and get a bigger lead. Because of the non-attack, and 4 penalties in the last period, Fucale made 22 saves while Igor Shestyorkin made his one and only save in the third at about 15 minutes into the period. Final shots were 41 for Russia and 18 for the QMJHL.

Photo courtesy of: CHL twitter account
The outstanding performance by Fucale and the early goals gave the Q the victory and closed the points gap between the CHL teams and the Russian team to 1. Russia now leads the Super Series in points 8-7. The two teams will meet again on Thursday evening in Rimouski, Quebec with the winner of the game in regulation taking the Series. Should game 6 be won by the Q in overtime or a shootout, I believe the Series will end in a tie.

Congrats to Zach and Team QMJHL on the victory. Keep it going tomorrow night in Rimouski.

Tuesday Thoughts

Here are some news and thoughts to get your Tuesday night started.

INJURIES
Cavan Fitzgerald is still out with a broken patella (knee cap) but will likely be back either this weekend or next when the Mooseheads are on the road. Two injuries came from this past weekend's games. Rookie Brett Crossley sustained a concussion in Friday night's win over provincial rivals after getting elbowed in the head by Cape Breton's Pierre-Luc Dubois at Scotiabank Centre. Dubois has since been suspended until further notice. The next evening in Sydney, captain Ryan Falkenham suffered a lower body injury. Falkenham will be out 6-8 weeks.

EHLERS
Danish forward Nikolaj Ehlers will be at the Joe Howe Superstore on Wednesday night to sign autographs. It was announced a couple weeks ago that he is among the 24 CHL players who have hockey cards in select boxes of Post Foods Canada cereals. Ehlers will be at the Superstore between 6:30 and 7:30 tomorrow night.

FUCALE
Mooseheads goaltender Zachary Fucale is among the 20 or so Quebec Major Junior Hockey League players that will be playing against the Russian juniors this week. The two teams will play a game tonight in Bathurst, New Brunswick and than again on Thursday night in Rimouski, Quebec. It was announced earlier today that Fucale will get the start for Team QMJHL. You can watch both games on Sportsnet beginning at 8pm Atlantic time.

RECAP: Eagles Force Split

SYDNEY - The Halifax Mooseheads were looking for a weekend sweep against the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles but another strong performance by Eagles goaltender Miguel Sullivan gave the Herd a split. Cape Breton's win gives them their second home and home series split against the Mooseheads this season. The home team has won all 4 games so far during the 2014-15 season. After a scoreless first period, Halifax scored the first goal of the game but they were unable to keep the 1-0 lead going into the third period being down 2-1 after 40 minutes. Matt Murphy closed the gap with just over 5 minutes left in regulation to make it a 3-2 game but despite pressing the Eagles late in the period, the Moose were unable to come up with it's third straight win.

RECAP: Second

HALIFAX - The second home and home series between provincial rivals Halifax Mooseheads and Cape Breton Screaming Eagles was started by a win the Herd in the first game once again. This one however was a little closer in the scoring department despite the Eagles shooting a lot more pucks on the Halifax net than the Mooseheads did on the Cape Breton net. Halifax got out to a somewhat slow start but was able to get some lucky bounces and had a 2-0 lead half way through the second period. Cape Breton made it close to end the second period. Zach Fucale gave the Moose the chance to receive the victory making ten saves in the third period, which saw no scoring by either team. The win gives the Mooseheads it's second 2 game win streak of the season.

Scotiabank Centre (10,595) ~ Halifax, NS

It's Friday night. It's a game against Cape Breton, our provincial rivals. It will be an exciting Friday night hockey matchup between the Mooseheads and the Screaming Eagles at the Scotiabank Centre this evening. Provincial rival games are always exciting but this weekend's series will be an important one for both teams. There is a point that seperates the two teams in the standings so a sweeo by either team will put some distance between the victor and last place in the Maritimes division. Halifax has been playing more confident lately while Cape Breton are coming into this game without a win since these two teams last met in October. Scoring for the Mooseheads is coming more appearent now and they'll need to be firing on all cylinders as they battle a team that is 6th in goals for despite the losing streak. How much hop will the Herd have after the thrilling game that was played on Wednesday night? We'll have to see but hopefully it is a lot.

Halifax and Cape Breton met almost a month ago on October 19 in Sydney. The Screaming Eagles skated away with the win. Philippe Gadoury scored the lone goal for the Mooseheads in the 4-1 loss while Zach Fucale made 33 saves on 36 shots in the defeat.

Overall Records
Eagles: 7-11-2-2 = 18 points (5th in Maritimes division, 15th overall)

RECAP: Ryan's Heroics Not Enough For Titan

HALIFAX - Andrew Ryan returned to Halifax for the first time since the Mooseheads traded him in the summer to the visiting Acadie-Bathurst Titan. His very late game heroics for his new team were for not as the Moose were able to pull through in the shootout. Ryan, who was an odd man out with Halifax in the overage category, led Bathurst being apart of all 4 goals recording two goals and two assists. His second goal of the game was scored with 0.3 seconds left which forced overtime after it looked like the Herd would skate to a regulation win. Former teammate Nikolaj Ehlers was the dominate player for the home team as he scored his first hat trick of the season and also assisted on the second Halifax goal. Ehlers also scored the lone goal in the shootout. Penalties were once again a subject of disgust in the Scotiabank Centre crowd. The time away seemed to affect Connor Moynihan who didn't keep his emotions in check getting 8 penalty minutes.

One comes back in, the other goes out. The Moynihan brothers have not played together for about half a month and they'll have to wait two more games to once again. Connor is returning from an upper body injury just as his older sibling is out for tonight and Friday's games because of a suspension. That's one story heading into this evening's tilt against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan in a mid week affair. It's a battle of the two worst teams in Maritimes division and both are coming off overtime games on the weekend. How will Halifax rebound after back to back losses this past weekend? We will have to see, it should be a good game with both teams trying to get some consistency.

This is the third game between the Mooseheads and Titan. Bathurst is 2-0-0-0 against Halifax this season. The last meeting was exactly one month ago in Bathurst, with the Titan coming away with a 2-0 win. Zach Fucale made 30 saves for the loss.

Moncton Coliseum (6,554) ~ Moncton, NB

It's rebound day for the Halifax Mooseheads. The Herd will be taking on the Moncton Wildcats tonight in hopes of getting their third win in 4 games to start the month of November. It will be the second striaght game that Halifax will be apart of a game that honours our Canadian Forces after they held their own last night. Moncton will be hosting Support the Troops Night with a special Gordon Howe Hartford Whalers jersey to be auctioned off. I have to say that this is one of the best things that junior hockey teams can do in Canada with proceeds in the raffle and auction going to the veterans.

This is the third game in the Moncton-Halifax season series. The two teams met exactly a week ago in Moose Country with the Mooseheads coming out on top in a 3-2 win which tied the series at 1 game a piece. Philippe Gadoury had 2 goals to lead his team to the victory while Zach Fucale made 23 saves.
