Here are just a few of the Herd boys who were on the Mooseheads team the past few seasons.
Canadian Interuniversity Sport
Travis Randell, Brendan Duke, Chris Clarke and Trey Lewis will be playing university hockey this year.
Brendan Duke will be studying locally, joining the Dalhousie Tigers team while getting an Arts degree. The Tigers also boast another former Mooseheads player in Ben MacAskill who is in his last year with the team, majoring in Kinesiology. Duke, MacAskill and the Tigers will host the Acadia Axemen in the home opener at the Halifax Forum tonight. The Axemen have third year forward Randell on their team. The Newfoundland native has 11 points over his previous two seasons with Acadia while also getting a Bachelor in Kinesiology.
Goaltender Chris Clarke is going to Queen's University and majoring in Commerce while playing for the Gaels hockey team. The 2014-15 season will be Clarke's second year with the team. He had a 1.92 goals against average last season in 8 games played.
After playing the rest of last season with the Miramichi Timberwolves in the MHL, former captain Trey Lewis has joined the St. Francis Xavier X-Men hockey team for this season. Lewis and the X-Men don't open their regular season until Tuesday when they host former Herd players Stephen MacAulay and Stephen Gillard and the Saint Mary's Huskies. St. FX also has Brad Cuzner on their team. Cuzner played for Halifax during the 2011-12 season.
National Hockey League
The Calder trophy winner for the 2013-14 NHL season was our very own former player, Nathan MacKinnon. He has started his sophomore season and will look to not be a part of the sophomore jinx. MacKinnon was a minus-2 in Colorado's Thursday night 5-0 loss to the Minnesota Wild. The two teams will play again tonight in Denver. He had some fun earlier this month with Canadian Olympian Charles Hamlin testing out the new Tacks skates. Check out the video below:
Jonathan Drouin was listed on the Tampa Bay Lightning's opening night roster but has yet to play because of a thumb injury. Drouin received the injury at the beginning of training camp and will be out for about a month. Tampa Bay will not rush him into the lineup but he will have the chance to play the normal nine game rookie tryout before the Lightning make a final decision. All reports suggest he will make the team for the full season and is the odd on favourite to win the Calder trophy.
American Hockey League
A few former players who have been unable to crack NHL rosters have made their respective team's AHL affiliate rosters.
MacKenzie Weegar, who led the Mooseheads in plus/minus in 2012-13, was one of the last members to be cut from the Florida Panthers main camp. Weegar will wear #2 this season for the San Antonio Rampage. He had 3 shots in the Rampage's 3-2 win over the Iowa Wild last night. Mack and San Antonio will play the Oklahoma City Barons tonight in SA. Weegar signed an entry level contract with the Panthers at the end of May which made the Mooseheads overage situation a little clearer.
6'5" defenseman Konrad Abeltshauser will play for the Worcester Sharks for the second straight season. The 22 year old was drafted by the Sharks NHL affiliate San Jose back in 2010 in the 6th round and will possibly play his entire professional career with the junior Sharks. Worcester begins their 2014-15 season this evening, visiting the Binghamton Senators. Abeltshauser had six goals and 21 points last season with the team.
Martin Frk has made the Grand Rapids Griffins team once again. The Griffs started their AHL season on Friday night with a 4-0 loss to the Lake Erie Monsters at home. Frk was a minus-1 with one shot recorded during the game. Marty and the team will visit Lake Erie tonight for a rematch against the Monsters. The Czech Republic player will wear #27 this season.
