How Great is Nate?

Well in one sense he is greater then "The Great One". Just a few months after being drafted first overall, Nathan MacKinnon collected 2 assists in his first ever National Hockey League game with the Colorado Avalanche. The Avs would go on to win 6-1 against the Anaheim Ducks in that opening game of their 2013-14 NHL season. With those 2 helpers, Nathan became the youngest player since 1944 to record two or more points in a game. (source)

10 days later in the nation's capital, MacKinnon scored on the left side of Michal Neuvirth to get his first professional goal. It was one of five goals that the Avs scored that night against the Washington Capitals in a 5-1 win, also Colorado's 5th striaght win.

Now 6 months later, Nathan has broken Wayne Gretzky's record of longest point streak by an 18 year old when MacKinnon assisted on the overtime winner in last night's 3-2 OT win versus the Detroit Red Wings. It was the thirteenth straight game that #29 had collected at least a point in the Avalanche uniform. Mr. Gretzky had recorded at least a point in 12 straight games back when he was 18 in the 1979-80 NHL season playing with the Edmonton Oilers. During the streak, Nate scored 5 goals and helped on 13 others for 18 points, a 1.38 points per game average.

Congratulations Nathan. Keep doing an awesome job in the NHL and I hope you get the Calder Trophy you deserve it.
