GAMEDAY #61: vs. Victoriaville

GAMEDAY
HALIFAX MOOSEHEADS VS VICTORIAVILLE TIGRES
Puck drops at 7pm
TV: Webcast | Radio: News 95.7 | Live: @MC_MooseCountry
Scotiabank Centre (10,595) ~ Halifax, NS

It's a battle of two of the top three league leading scorers tonight as your Halifax Mooseheads host the Victoriaville Tigres for a mid-week match. The Tigres have Vitalii Abramov who has the second most points so far this season while the young man with the third most is on the Mooseheads; Otto Somppi. With 6 of the top 20 scorers in the QMJHL participating in this one game, we should be in for a high scoring game. However, Halifax is going to want to lessen the amount of goals against after letting in 7 on Sunday evening. While the Herd remain one of the top teams in the league, they are coming off a bad loss and will have to show more jump against a team who has won three straight in Victoriaville. Come out and see if the Moose can rebound as they take on Anaheim Ducks prospect Maxime Comtois before the boys hit the road again.

This is the second and last game between these two teams this season. Halifax is 0-1-0-0 against the Tigres while Victoriaville has a 1-0-0-0 record versus the Mooseheads. The last matchup was October 22 in Victoriaville where the Herd were shutout losing 2-0 on the road with Alexis Gravel making 23 saves.

OVERALL RECORDS

Big Victory on National Television

Photo - Shawn Davidson
Halifax took advantage of the exposure that a nationally televised game gives and played a pretty good game that led to a 4-1 victory over the Gatineau Olympiques. Alexis Gravel put on a show by stopping 29 shots while Otto Somppi had two big goals to help the Mooseheads get the win in front of over 8,000 fans on Saturday evening. The game started with a small pre-game ceremony because the Memorial Cup trophy was in the house. Herd alum Brent Andrews and Darcy Ashley came out with the Cup and a few military personnel who were all apart of the ceremonial faceoff. After the anthem, the puck dropped and there wasn't much action in either end for the first 10 minutes but Halifax was able to get a powerplay goal on their second shot to get the early lead. Max Fortier made some nice moves late in the frame putting the home team up 2-0 after the first period. Gravel stayed strong in the second period as Gatineau really came out, outshooting the Moose 10-5 but the score stayed 2-0 through 40 minutes. The Olympiques were able to get one through Alexis in the third but Somppi scored his second to give Halifax the two goal lead again. With about seven minutes to go in the match, the Piques captain Alex Breton got a stick in the gut and was helped off the ice to the dressing room but it seemed to make the away team pissed off as there were a couple of scrums in those final minutes. The first was Raphael Lavoie versus Jeffrey Durocher fighting off the faceoff and as those two players were skating to the dressing rooms, the coaches exploded with not very nice words and Fortier decided to say some choice words as well causing him to be tossed. The second was a short boxing match between Connor Moynihan and Gabriel Bilodeau.

GAMEDAY #57: vs Gatineau

GAMEDAY
HALIFAX MOOSEHEADS VS GATINEAU OLYMPIQUES
Puck drops at 4:30pm

Scotiabank Centre (10,595) ~ Halifax, NS

For the first time this season your Halifax Mooseheads are on national television tonight meaning puck drop has moved to 4:30pm. The Herd will host the Gatineau Olympiques while looking for their fifth win in a row. Both teams have been pretty hot lately with Halifax going 7-2-1-0 in their last 10 games played and conversely Gatineau having a 7-1-1-1 record however the Olympiques are coming off a loss to Moncton. Despite winning four in a row, the home team in today's contest has struggled at times during the streak. They were down 3-1 early on against Moncton last Friday before finding their offense and the Moose had to win the last two games in overtime. What kind of team will we see from the club today, we'll have to wait and find out but they'll need to start on time because the 'Piques are going to be hungry for a win to put themselves in a better position. It's a big day in Moose Country for another reason as well as the Memorial Cup 100 tour is swinging through Halifax this weekend so if you head to the game be sure to get a picture with the trophy and tag your photos with #Halifax2019.

This is the second and last game between these two teams this season. Halifax is 1-0-0-0 against the Olympiques while Gatineau has a 0-1-0-0 record versus the Mooseheads. The last matchup was November 3 in Gatineau where the Herd won 7-5 with Filip Zadina scored a hat trick and added an assist to lead the away team.

OVERALL RECORDS
Olympiques: 31-21-3-3 = 68 points (4th in West division, 10th overall)

Lavoie Overtime Hero Again

Photo - Myles Dennis
For the fifth time this season, 17 year old Raphael Lavoie was the hero in overtime to give the Halifax Mooseheads 3 straight wins. The victory also stopped the Rimouski Oceanic's win streak at 5 games. Halifax got off to a very fast start when Filip Zadina scored his 38th goal just 36 seconds into the game. In the next five minutes the Mooseheads scored two more times to lead 3-0 on only 4 shots which led the Oceanic to pull starting goalie Colten Ellis. The move seemed to help Rimouski a little bit as the away team got a goal with under 6 minutes to go in the first period. Connor Moynihan and Lavoie scored before the end of the frame to give the Herd a commending 5-1 lead. In the second Rimouski was able to catch the home team sleeping some and closed the gap to one goal with the help of rookie Alexis Lafreniere. The 16 year old Lafreniere also scored the tying goal in the third period to force overtime. In the final minutes Moose tried to end it in regulation as well as get Zadina a hat trick but were unable to close it out. The victory was also the 800th regular season win in the Halifax Mooseheads franchise.

HALIFAX MOOSEHEADS VS RIMOUSKI OCEANIC

Scotiabank Centre (10,595) ~ Halifax, NS

School's out so why not bring the family to an afternoon hockey game as your Halifax Mooseheads take on the Rimouski Oceanic on Family Day. The Oceanic are one of the hottest teams coming in to today's match as winners of five straight and have also clinched a spot in the playoffs leading the East division. Halifax will look to give another performance like Friday evening where they scored a home record 12 goals in a big victory over Moncton but with both teams coming into this afternoon's competition separated by just one point, expect a tight low scoring game. This will be the lone time that Moose Country will see 16 year old phenom Alexis Lefreniere who is now tied with Mooseheads' forward Filip Zadina a top the rookie scoring leaders with 67 points. Lafreniere actually leads the Oceanic in scoring while for part of the season Zadina led the Herd but was passed by veteran Otto Somppi a few weeks ago. We should be in for a very exciting game and with 6 home matches after today there's no better time to come cheer on for the Herd as everyone looks to finish off the season strong before the playoffs.

This is the first game between these two teams. Halifax was 1-1-0-0 against the Oceanic last season while Rimouski had a 1-1-0-0 record versus the Mooseheads. The last matchup was on January 29, 2017 where Rimouski came away with a 5-4 home victory with Halifax getting goals from four different players.

OVERALL RECORDS

Moose Win Big Against The Wildcats

Photo - Myles Dennis
Your Halifax Mooseheads set a new franchise record for goals scored at home tonight with a huge offensive performance against the Moncton Wildcats. The game started with all the momentum going in the Mooseheads way when they opened the scoring a minute and twenty-six seconds into the game, but then after that, they sat back and let the Wildcats back into the game with the Wildcats scoring three goals in the span of four minutes. As things started to calm a bit and the Mooseheads went on the power play they made the most of the opportunity scoring less than a minute in. After the power play goal by McIssac, the floodgates opened your Mooseheads, they then scored nine unanswered goals to take a 10-3 lead early in the third. In the third Moncton got two back with goals from Fox and Phelan. While tempers started to boil there was a hit on Fortier that the Mooseheads players did not like and it saw Connor Moynihan as well as Max Fortier finding a partner and both fighting and subsequently being done for the night. With just under three minutes to go Benoit-Olivier Groulx scored for the moose and with that goal, it set a new record of 12 goals being scored in a game by the home team. Tempers were high in the last seconds of the game seeing Alex Gravel getting run which drew a crowd to stand up for their goalie.

For the first time since 2011, the Dalhousie Tigers will be in the Atlantic University Sport playoffs. They made the post-season as 6th place with a 9-20-1 record and will face off against the Acadia Axemen in the first round. Other teams in the first round include UPEI Panthers and Saint Mary's Huskies who will go against each other in the other best of 3 series. Four of the six teams to extend their seasons have players who have previously played for your Halifax Mooseheads. The Tigers have the most Herd alumni this season with 4, while Saint Mary's and UNB have 3 former Moose players and lastly the Panthers have two. HALIFAX MOOSEHEADS VS SHAWINIGAN CATARACTES
Puck drops at 3pm
TV: Webcast | Radio: News 95.7 | Live: @MC_MooseCountry
Scotiabank Centre (10,595) ~ Halifax, NS

Your Halifax Mooseheads are coming into today's game with probably a little bit of doubt in their heads as they have lost two straight for only the third time this season. Both games last week, the Herd really should have won considering they were up 3-1 against Chicoutimi on Thursday and playing last place Saint John Sea Dogs on Friday evening. Halifax will look to rebound against another team that is currently not making the playoffs but the Shawinigan Cataractes are coming off a high scoring game against the Sea Dogs last night in the battle of the last two teams in the standings. Today's game is the first of three home matches in the next 8 days but we're beginning the final stretch of the season. Shawinigan has struggled this season and will most likely not make the playoffs but they have been able to defeat teams above them as evident by their 16 victories. The Cataractes will look to do the same and give the Moose a third straight loss.

This is the second and last game between these two teams. Halifax is 0-0-0-1 against the Cataractes while Shawinigan has a 1-0-0-0 record versus the Mooseheads. The last matchup was on December 6 with the home Cats picking up a 3-2 shootout victory after Arnaud Durandeau scored the tying goal with under 7 minutes left in the second.

OVERALL RECORDS
Cataractes: 16-33-4-0 = 36 points (6th in East division, 15th overall)
Mooseheads: 34-13-6-1 = 75 points (1st in Maritimes division, 2nd overall)

LEADING SCORERS
HAL: Otto Somppi 66pts (19G & 47A), FIlip Zadina 61pts (35G & 26A), Maxime Fortier 61pts (26G & 35A)

PREVIOUS GAMES
Like I said above, Shawinigan is coming off a 8-5 victory over Saint John last night on the road after being down 3-0 in the first. Jan Drozg led the Cataractes with 4 assists while Mathieu Bellemare stopped 20 of the Sea Dogs 25 shots to get the win.

Halifax is coming off a disappointing loss to those Sea Dogs on Friday evening, losing 6-3 in Saint John. Filip Zadina scored his team leading 35th goal while goalie Blade Mann-Dixon made 36 saves as the home team outshot your Mooseheads 42-31.

#Halifax2019

Photo - Vincent Ethier (via Herd website)
More than a year after announcing it's plans to bid for the 2019 Memorial Cup, your Halifax Mooseheads took another step towards that goal when they submitted paperwork last month.

In mid-January, Halifax tweeted that they had submitted their bid document, making the January 15 deadline given by the Memorial Cup selection committee. The committee will now visit the short list of teams who have placed bids which also includes the Moncton Wildcats. No date was given but the visit will most likely include a meeting with each teams' management group making their case, plus a look at what facilities each city has to accommodate the amount of people who attend the tournament.

Both teams released a video that will I'm sure also be presented to the selection committee at their visit either this month or next. Below is the clip for the Mooseheads:

The Canadian Hockey League along with the Memorial Cup selection committee will announce the winning city on April 5. If Halifax does win the tournament, be prepared to possibly give up your seat if you are a season ticket holder or 15 game ticket holder as the Herd will have to give a certain amount of tickets to the league.

Good luck to both the Moncton Wildcats and Halifax Mooseheads. In my opinion, our Mooseheads will have the better team next season and have said the last couple of years that 2018-19 is the year they are going for it all like they did in 2012-13. However, considering how well they are doing this season 90% of the time, and the fact that we may not have 2 of our top 3 (possibly all three) leading scorers next year, the Herd may not have the offensive power or goaltending to get the President's Cup in 2019. We shall see though since quite a few people did not expect the Moose to be leading their division right now so they are clearly finding ways to win and hopefully that will continue next season. All and all though I think the city of Halifax and the Halifax Mooseheads will be selected as the hosts for next year's tournament because we have more hotels closer to the arena, a better selection of restaurants in the downtown core and a new convention centre where meetings can be held (I think the league has a board meeting during the tournament).

QMJHL Names Scholastic POM

Every month, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League announces a Scholastic Player of the Month which recognizes a player on each team with his performance on ice and in the classroom. The player is selected based on their school results, their implication, the school-hockey conciliation, their team spirit and their on-ice performances.

For your Halifax Mooseheads, Raphael Lavoie was named the Scholastic Player of the Month for January 2018. Lavoie scored 10 goals in the month of January, recording 18 points during the 11 games played while also being a plus-7 and collecting only 10 penalty minutes.
