Fichthorn gets first Q win

The Halifax Mooseheads got off to a hot start on Friday night and it propelled them to a 5-4 shootout win over the host Cape Breton Eagles. 20-year-old Quinn Kennedy went coast to coast to score the first goal of the season for Halifax, giving the away team a 1-0 lead at the 6:09 mark of the opening period. Veteran Eliot Litalien tied the game up for Cape Breton about seven minutes later but it didn’t take long for the Mooseheads to retake the lead. Rookie Nico Uschan recorded his first QMJHL career goal to help his team to a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes. In the middle frame, the teams traded goals last in the period as former Herd Reece Peitzsche got on the board but the home team still was down 4-2 after the second period. The Eagles pushed back in the third scoring twice to tie the game and force overtime. American goaltender Jack Fichthorn played a strong game for Halifax, making some highlight saves specifically one late in the third to keep the score 4-4. The 19-year-old stopped both shots in the extra frame before going 2-of-3 in the shootout to pick up his first career QMJHL victory. Kennedy was named second star of the game after collecting three assists on top of his goal.
