Around the CHL Playoff Update

What a Friday night in Moose Country and in the QMJHL as a whole during night 6 of the 2025 playoffs. First, I apologize for not keeping up with previews/recaps - I try to write something but it just hasn’t come to me lately. So I thought I would do a post-season update and as you'll see, words came to me today.

Photo - Herd Twitter

In a series that probably most thought that Drummondville would sweep, the Volts find themselves down 3-2 after a very exciting Game 5 last night in Halifax. The Mooseheads went on the road and picked up two gutsy victories, both by a score of 3-2. For Game 1, Halifax was outshot and in a 0-2 hole early in the third period but an injury to Voltigeurs starting goaltender Riley Mercer turned the tide. Back-up Louis-Felix Charrois let in three goals on 5 shots as Antoine Fontaine, Caylen Blake and Quinn Kennedy scored for Halifax. The second game was a bit more back and forth but once again the home team had the upper hand in shots, however they could not get the victory as the teams went to overtime. Liam Kilfoil scored the OT winner in that one. Coming back home with two wins, Moose Country was excited to see their team continue that play but Jacob Steinman could only hold the boys in it for so long and the Herd lost 4-1 in Game 3. Drummondville tied the series up on Wednesday night with a 3-1 win where shots were 54-17 Volts.

For a young team, Halifax has shown heart all season and in most games have been competitive. Well, Friday night was no different. They came out acting like they wanted to win and win they did in front of 6,760 fans. The away team got on the board first with a power play goal by Ethan Gauthier, his 6th of the series, but before the end of the opening period, Brady Schultz picked up his first of the playoffs to bring life back into the Scotiabank Centre and tie the game. Braeden MacPhee then gave Halifax the 2-1 lead a little past the halfway point. Yoan Tassé tied it up at the 7:38 mark of the third period though 90 seconds later Lincoln Waugh gave the Herd back the lead. Liam Kilfoil scored late in the third to give Halifax the 4-2 victory.

The series will now shift to Drummondville again for game 6 and if necessary, game 7 as well.

In the rest of the Q, four more series wrapped up on Friday so Chicoutimi, Rouyn-Noranda, Shawinigan and Sherbrooke will join Moncton and Rimouski in the second round. The Wildcats and Oceanic swept their series’ on Wednesday night while the others mentioned finished 4 games to 1. Number 5 Sherbrooke defeating #4 Blainville-Boisbriand in five games is a bit of an upset, though only 5 points separated the two clubs so it really could’ve gone either way. With the Sagueneens ousting the Acadie-Bathurst Titan, it ends this era of major junior hockey being in the Chaleur region as the team will move to St. John’s, NL for next season. At least Game 5 in that series was in NB so they got to say goodbye to their fans.

Photo - Eagles website
You may have noticed there was one series I haven’t mentioned yet. That would be the #4 Baie-Comeau Drakkar versus the #5 Cape Breton Eagles. The two teams played a marathon of a game last night as the Eagles were trying to extend their season after going down 3 games to 1 in the series. Cape Breton forced a Game 6 after Angelo Fullerton scored the game winner in the 5th overtime period! And they did it in front of their home fans. At 141:42 minutes, the match was the longest in both franchise's history but the 2nd longest in league history. Apparently the game could've been done earlier but Baie-Comeau had two goals called back in the second and fourth overtime, and Cape Breton had one disallowed in the third extra frame. The goaltenders of course were busy but Jakub Milota was the busier of the two, stopping 84 of the Drakkar's 86 shots earning him first star honours.

Here's how all the playoff series in the Canadian Hockey League

NHL DRAFT RANKINGS
The Central Scouting Services released their final rankings last month for the 2023 NHL draft and there are a few current Halifax Mooseheads players on the list. Sophomore Mathieu Cataford was the highest ranked Herd player at #36 after finishing the season with 31 goals and 75 points. He dropped from 27th on the mid-term rankings. 18-year-old Dylan MacKinnon was ranked #61 while Markus Vidicek found himself at #175. MacKinnon had a huge jump in his point production in his second season, picking up 23 points in 61 games. 19-year-old Vidicek had 32 goals and 80 points during 2022-23.

The highest ranking QMJHL player is Ethan Gauthier of the Sherbrooke Phoenix who is at #16. The 2023 NHL Entry Draft will be held June 28-29 in Nashville, TN.

FINAL SERIES
The three final series across the Canadian Hockey League are now set after games on Monday. Fourth place Peterborough came up with another upset in the Eastern Conference final, winning Game 7 3-2 to move on to the OHL championship series. The Memorial Cup hosts Kamloops Blazers are out of the WHL playoffs after losing to the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-2 two nights ago. Below are the matchups for the championships.

WHL - E1 Winnipeg ICE vs. W1 Seattle Thunderbirds
OHL - W2 London Knights vs. E4 Peterborough Petes
QMJHL - 1 Quebec Remparts vs. 2 Halifax Mooseheads

SOLD OUT
Round four tickets for Games 1 & 2 at the Centre Videotron went on sale this past Friday before the Quebec Remparts even knew who their opponent was going to be. Quebec fans went all in, selling out both nights in less than 20 minutes according to the team.

However, like normal, there are people reselling them on Ticket Master if you would still like some but you'll have to fork up some money. The cheapest I saw yesterday was $59 for one ticket and went up to over $250 each.

CHL IMPORT DRAFT
Recently, the Canadian Hockey League announced the order of selection for the import draft. 'Your Halifax Mooseheads hold the 50th overall pick while their second round pick is 110th overall thanks to a strong season that saw the Herd post a 50-11-4-3 record. Current imports Attilio Biasca and David Moravec are eligible to return next year as 20-year-old overage players.' So it will be interesting to see if the Herd actually use their selections. The Erie Otters of the OHL will pick first overall followed by the QMJHL's Acadie-Bathurst Titan and the Edmonton Oil Kings (WHL). The 2023 Import Draft will take place on July 5 at 11am ET.

ALUMNI CHAMPIONS
A couple of Moose alumni are once again champions. Sternberk, Czech Republic native Petr Vrana captained the HC Ocelari Trinec to franchise fifth Czech Extraliga trophy on April 28. According to Elite Prospects; the 38-year-old had an assist in 3 games played during the regular season and two points (1G&1A) in 20 playoff matches. Trinec won the final series 4-2 against the Mountfield HK.

Defenceman Konrad Abeltshauser won the DEL championship for a fourth time in his career. The EHC Red Bull Munchen battled it out against the ERC Ingolstadt and got the 4-1 series win. The 30-year-old scored 4 times in the regular season and had 18 points while in the post-season he had 4 points in 18 games.

Congratulations to both players on getting another trophy.

DUMAIS
According to Saltwire, 'Halifax general manager Cam Russell said on Monday there's "a really food chance" Jordan Dumais will be cleared to play at some point against the Quebec Remparts.' He could possibly play in Game 1 on Friday. Dumais missed the last four games of the semi-final series after getting injured in the second period of Game 2 against the Sherbrooke Phoenix.

It would be great to see Dumer return to the lineup but Halifax has played really well while he was out so does Sylvain Farveau make changes to a good thing even if Jordan is ready.

SAINT JOHN SEA DOGS WIN 2022 MEMORIAL CUP!!!

Saint John will look to repeat as Memorial Cup champions but they'll have a difficult time with more than half of the roster from the 2022 championship team moving on. This year the Memorial Cup will be held in Kamloops, home of the Kamloops Blazers who will be in the tournament no matter what. Prospects will look to continue impressing scouts as some will be eligible to be invited to World Junior camps in early December, which will most likely include at least one Halifax Moosehead as the city is co-hosting the tournament.

Second Round Matchups Set

It's been a few days and the second round has actually begun but I've had a busy weekend so just getting to this now. Our Halifax Mooseheads were eliminated from the playoffs on Friday night in a small New Brunswick town after the Acadie-Bathurst Titan won Game 5 2-1. With that, the second round matchups have been set.

Acadie-Bathust trailed 2-0 in the series and forced a winner take all final game by winning Game 4 in triple overtime on Wednesday. It became the longest game in team history after passing the 3:02 mark of the third OT period, the previous record which was set in 2008.

The second round for the QMJHL 2022 post-season started on Sunday afternoon with the following teams going against each other. Once again, this round is a best-of-five.

Eastern conference
#1 Quebec Remparts vs. #6 Rimouski Oceanic
#2 Charlottetown Islanders vs. #4 Acadie-Bathurst Titan

Western conference
#1 Sherbrooke Phoenix vs. #5 Blainville-Boisbriand Armada
#2 Gatineau Olympiques vs. #3 Shawinigan Cataractes

These matchups also mean that the Memorial Cup host Saint John Sea Dogs have been eliminated in the opening round in an upset. The club made moves during the season so they could be a top contender this year and win it all however, Rimouski surprised them by winning Game 5 in overtime.

In the Ontario Hockey League, they are into their conference finals which will see the Hamilton Bulldogs (1) take on the North Bay Battalion (2) in the eastern conference while in the western conference, the Windsor Spitfires (1) will battle the Flint Firebirds (3).

The conference final matchups in the Western Hockey League are not fully settled but we know three of the four teams that will be participating. The Winnipeg ICE (1) will take on the Edmonton Oil Kings (2) in the eastern conference.and the Kamloops Blazers (2) are still awaiting their opponent.

Welcome to Halifax

While the Halifax Mooseheads have known for 13 months that they will participate in the 2019 Memorial Cup because they were named the host team, the three other teams are now determined as well. The league finals wrapped up last night after the Prince Albert Raiders defeated the Vancouver Giants in overtime of Game 7 to win the Ed Cheynoweth Cup.

So I thought I would do a little preview to get you set up for the tournament. It will run from May 16 to May 26 here in Halifax.

TEAMS
A host club plus the three league champions participate in the 10-day tournament. This year the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies (QMJHL), Guelph Storm (OHL), Prince Albert Raiders (WHL) and our Halifax Mooseheads (hosts) will look to become national junior champions.

HOW THEY GOT HERE
Many people thought that Halifax would take the back door into the tournament as hosts, especially after the team lost their first two playoff games but the Mooseheads rebounded and made it all the way to President Cup finals. The club even showed that they could hang with the top dogs as they defeated the CHL's best Rouyn-Noranda Huskies twice during the last series. They defeated the Quebec Remparts in 7 games, swept the Moncton Wildcats in the quarter-finals, beat the Drummondville Voltigeurs in 6 matches before losing to the Huskies.

The biggest story would have to be the Guelph Storm, who have been the come back kids all playoffs long. The Storm swept the Kitchener Rangers in the first round before finding themselves down 0-3 in the second round to the London Knights which they ended that series in 7 games. Guelph defeated the Saginaw Spirit in 7 games to take the Western conference than pulled off 4 straight wins to finish the Ottawa 67's in 6 matches to get the J. Ross Robertson Cup.

Prince Albert also swept their first round, defeating the Red Deer Rebels in 4 games, then they took down the Saskatoon Blades in 6 matches before dispatching the Edmonton Oil Kings also in 6 to win the Eastern conference title. The Raiders were up 3-1 in the final series before the Vancouver Giants won two straight to force a Game 7 which as I mentioned above went to extra time with Dante Hannoun scoring the game winner.

The Rouyn-Noranda Huskies didn't have an easy time getting out of the opening round either as they defeated the last place Shawinigan Catactes in 6 games but defeated the Victoriaville Tigres and Rimouski Oceanic both in four matches. They won the President Cup in 6 games on Scotiabank Centre ice.

CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
This is great. The last game will be an exciting one no matter who is in it.
