Russia Wins 2014 Super Series
Two days after winning a pivotal game 5 to close the points gap, Team QMJHL was unable to win the 2014 Subway Super Series losing on Thursday night 3-2 to Team Russia. The victory gave Russia it's third Series title, winning 11-7 in points.
The Q made it a game scoring it's second goal of the third period at 12:31 but the damage had already been done earlier in the game with Russia taking a 3-0 lead going into the last 20 minutes. Igor Shestyorkin stood tall in the last few minutes of the game when the QMJHL were pressing hard to tie the game up and force overtime. Once again, Team QMJHL had a period where they only had one shot (second period) but the team led the shots category last night in Rimouski, with 27 shots to Russia's 21 overall.
Halifax Mooseheads goaltender did not play in this second QMJHL-Russia game. Instead, Philippe Desrosiers of the Game 6 hosts Rimouski Oceanic made the start.

Congratulations to Russia on winning the Series. The next step for the young players who were apart of the 3 different Canadian Hockey League teams is waiting. All 60-plus players will be hoping to get that call that they ahve made the Canadian National Junior team that will play in Toronto and Montreal after Christmas during the 2015 World Juniors.

Fucale Makes 40 Saves in Win
It's not very often you need to make 22 saves in one period but that is what current Halifax Mooseheads goaltender Zachary Fucale had to do last night in Bathurst, NB. Fucale was in the New Brunswick town as part of Team QMJHL for the Subway Super Series between the Q and the Russian junior team. The Quebec team was able to get out to a 3-0 lead 25:33 into the game on Tuesday night. After 2 periods, it was 3-1 QMHJL over Russia with shots close at 19-17 in favour of Russia. QMJHL decided to sit back and protect their lead instead of attacking the Russian net and get a bigger lead. Because of the non-attack, and 4 penalties in the last period, Fucale made 22 saves while Igor Shestyorkin made his one and only save in the third at about 15 minutes into the period. Final shots were 41 for Russia and 18 for the QMJHL.
The outstanding performance by Fucale and the early goals gave the Q the victory and closed the points gap between the CHL teams and the Russian team to 1. Russia now leads the Super Series in points 8-7. The two teams will meet again on Thursday evening in Rimouski, Quebec with the winner of the game in regulation taking the Series. Should game 6 be won by the Q in overtime or a shootout, I believe the Series will end in a tie.
Congrats to Zach and Team QMJHL on the victory. Keep it going tomorrow night in Rimouski.

UPDATE: QMJHL Names Subway Series Roster
The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League has released its Subway Series roster that will play in Bathurst, NB on November 18 and Rimouski, QC on November 20.
In the past few years, the Halifax Mooseheads have had a couple of players on Team QMJHL. This season only one Herd player was named to the team. Congratulations to Halifax's favourite goaltender; Zach Fucale being named as one of the goalies for the Q. The Mooseheads broke the news earlier today on their site.
I'm not sure why there are no other Halifax Mooseheads players listed on the roster but we shouldn't take away from the achievement Zach has made yet again.
The Rimouski Oceanic have the most players listed on the roster at 4, while both the Charlottetown Islanders and Moncton Wildcats do not have any players listed. Congrats to all players. You can watch the whole series (6 games) on Sportsnet.

The six-game series, which features regional teams of Canadian National Junior Team candidates competing against the Russian National Junior Team, opens for the first time with two games hosted by the WHL beginning in Saskatoon, SK, home of the Blades, on Monday November 10, with the second WHL host site for Game 2 on Tuesday November 11 still to be determined. The series shifts to the OHL who will maintain the middle leg of the series with Game 3 to be hosted by the Peterborough Petes on Thursday November 13, followed by Game 4 hosted by the Kingston Frontenacs on Monday November 17. “On behalf of the Canadian Hockey League we look forward to bringing the SUBWAY® Super Series to CHL communities for the 12th straight season next November,” said CHL President David Branch. “The CHL would like to thank title sponsor SUBWAY® Restaurants and partner Hockey Canada for their continued support as well as broadcast partners Sportsnet and TVA Sports as we showcase many of the league’s best players to CHL fans across the country in advance of the World Junior Championship hosted by Montreal and Toronto.”
The SUBWAY® Super Series has been an integral part of the identification process for Team Canada for the past 11 years prior to the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship. In each of the last four seasons the series has been decided in the final game with the CHL emerging victorious for the ninth time in 2013 winning by a 10-8 margin in points. Team Canada also faced Russia for the fourth straight time at the World Junior Championship this season in Malmo, Sweden, with Russia earning the bronze medal with a 2-1 victory over Canada. Russia’s roster featured 10 players from the 2013 SUBWAY® Super Series along with Mikhail Grigorenko who participated in the event in 2011 and 2012, while Canada’s roster included 21 players from last year’s series along with Mathew Dumba who also played for Team WHL in 2011 and 2012.
“For the sixth year running, SUBWAY® Restaurants will join hockey fans across Canada in cheering on our country’s top major junior players,” said Kathleen Bell, Director of National Marketing, SUBWAY® Restaurants of Canada. “As the Official Training Restaurant of the CHL, we are delighted to lend our support to the SUBWAY® Super Series and continue to fuel CHL fans and athletes across the country.”

Rimouski hosted in the first year of competition back in 2003 with Oceanic star Sidney Crosby earning player of the game honours with three assists for Team QMJHL in the 6-3 victory. Peterborough and Saskatoon both hosted the event in 2005 with a pair of hometown heroes leading their respective leagues to victory. The Petes’ Liam Reddox scored two goals as player of the game in a 5-1 OHL win, and the Blades’ Devin Setoguchi scored a hat-trick as player of the game for Team WHL in the 9-2 triumph.
All six games of the SUBWAY ® Super Series will be broadcast nationally on Sportsnet and TVA Sports. The 2014 SUBWAY® Super Series is supported by CHL associate sponsors Bank of Montreal and Old Dutch.

Q takes Game 1
In the first game of the 2013 Subway Super Series, which is between Hockey Canada's three junior leagues and select junior age Russian players, Canada came out on top with the biggest help from Halifax Moosehead Jonathan Drouin.
The first three goals were scored by Quebec Major Junior Hockey League players but the score was only 2-1 for Team QMJHL halfway though the game. Both Q goals in the first 24 minutes were scored by Charles Hudon. Russia's only goal in 2 periods was scored by Moncton Wildcats player Ivan Barbashev. Vladimir Tkachev tied it up at two a piece just over the 6 minute mark in the third.
It looked like the first game would be going to a shootout, no overtime games in this series, but with just over four minutes left Anthony Mantha (surprise surprise) gave the Gatineau fans a feeling of happiness to go home. Of course there was no gaurentee that Quebec would skate away victors unless Zach Fucale continued to stay strong and he did. Drouin assisted on three Team QMJHL goals in the game.

Herd Word
LEWIS
Trey Lewis was the odd man out when the Halifax Moosehads made their decision about their overagers on Tuesday. With Lewis injured and the only way for him to be 100% is to get surgery, which takes about 9 months to recover, the Moose decided to keep Brendan Duke as their third 20 year old. Trey returned home after the news and will now play for the Miramichi Timberwolves. He will be playing through the pain in the Maritime Junior A League as he is set to make his debut tonight against the Weeks Crushers in Pictou County.
Dan Robertson of Eastlink wrote a nice story about Trey's time in Halifax.
CAPTAINS
Jonathan Drouin has been named the Team QMJHL captain for the Subway Super Series. Charles Hudon, Dillion Fournier and Felix Girard were named the alternates this afternoon. The team will start the 6 game series on Monday and play again on Wednesday.
BMO RANKINGS
Your Moosehads returned to the top 10 this week in the BMO CHL rankings after being left out in week 8. With 4 straight wins the Moose were ranked #10 nationally.
SUBWAY SERIES
Talking about the Subway Series, I will have recaps and possibly even previews of the two QMJHL versus Russia games when it gets underway next week in Gatineau. All games will be broadcasted on Sportnet television starting at 8pm Atlantic time for the two Quebec ones.

Subway Series coaches announced
The head coaches and assistants have been named for the 2013 Subway Series which will be held in the second half of November. Team QMJHL will be headed by Gatineau Olympiques coach Benoit Groulx. DJ Smith (Oshawa Generals) and Dale Hunter (London Knights) will split the role for Team OHL and Brent Sutter of the Red Deer Rebels will coach Team WHL.
Groulx will be assisted on the bench by our very own Dominique Ducharme when the Q team takes on Russia in Gatineau and Sherbrooke on November 18 and 20th respectively. The game in Oshawa on November 21st will be normal for the Gens fans as Smith will be joined on the bench by his coaching staff, Roger Hunt and Paul McFarland. November 25th will see Team OHL take on the Russians in Sudbury for the second Ontario game with Wolves coach Paul Fixter beside Hunter. Ryan McGill of the Kootenay Ice will assist Sutter for coaching Team WHL on November 27 in Red Deer and November 28 in Lethbridge.
Dale Hunter, D.J. Smith and Dom Ducharme were all on the bench together when Canada's U-18 National Team captured the Gold medal at the Ivan Hlinka tournament this past August.
I'll have coverage of the Quebec games at the very least. When the rosters for each team are announced I will post them here.
