Green Takes Game 1

If you were at the RBC Centre on Sunday afternoon, you were treated to a bit of a one sided match up in the Green vs. White intrasquad game. The on-ice portion of training camp got underway this morning with the team divided into two separate groups for practice at 9 a.m. followed by the intrasquad game at 3 p.m. Team Green took the first contest by a score of 8-3 as three of their players scored two goals each. The team will have the same schedule tomorrow.

The game appeared like it might go into the second period all tied but Mathis Laplante scored late in the opening frame to give Green a 3-2 lead as the boys headed to the locker rooms. Ben Wallace recorded the first goal of the match however, to give White a 1-0 lead. Goals by Alec Nasreddine, Reece Peitzsche and Aidan Bent made the score 6-2 Team Green after 40 minutes. Bent, Laplante and Nasreddine all scored twice during the game. The other Team White goals came from Cade Moser and Eddy Doyle.

Most of the veterans did not play in this afternoon's game and I expect we won't see them tomorrow either. If things go like normal, we will probably see the first round of cuts on Monday evening or possibly Tuesday morning. Should I get the opportunity, I will let you know here.

CAMP: Another Intrasquiad Game Split

It was the second and final day of intrasquad games on Saturday and both teams came away with a victory.

Just like the matches yesterday, this morning's game was super close going to a shootout to determine the winner. Team White opened the scoring with a penalty shot by Antoine Morand. Rookie Samuel Dube tied it up for Green before Raphael Lavoie scored to give White a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period, the first of two goals he scored in the game. Before long regulation was over and both teams headed straight to a shootout with the match tied at 4 goals a piece. 2018 import draft pick Marcel Barinka had the shootout winner for White. Other goals scored for the losers were by Benoit-Olivier Groulx, Justin Trudel and Kyle Petten while Barinka added one in regulation as well.

In the early evening game, it looked like the teams would go to the intermission scoreless but Groulx scored with minutes left to give Team Green a 1-0 lead. After three high-scoring matches, it was surprising to see just one goal through 40 minutes of play but Green didn't want to keep it that way as they scored 3 goals in the final 8 minutes to win the game 4-0. Joel Bishop and Trudel scored while the fourth goal was tipped in by someone. The two teams played 3 on 3 overtime for 10 minutes to end the series of scrimmages.

Late Saturday evening, the Mooseheads announced that three players have left training camp on their own accord; defenceman Stephen Davis, forward Ethan Phillips and goaltender Noah Battaglia. Phillips and Davis left camp to keep their NCAA eligibility. Both players were drafted in the 2018 QMJHL entry draft while Battaglia was a free agent invite. This leaves 44 players remaining at camp.

Half the team will now head to Cape Breton to take on the Screaming Eagles in both clubs first pre-season game. Puck drop is 4pm. The other half who stay home will have a workout.

CAMP: Series Split Going into Day Two

The Halifax Mooseheads training camp got underway yesterday morning with all players reporting to the Dartmouth 4 Pad; the new home practice facility for the team. Today, the boys were split into two groups for scrimmages with one team wearing white jerseys while the other were green. In previous years, Halifax has done red-green scrimmages.

Both games were divided into 2 35-minute non-stoppage periods. Game one began at 9am in front of a good crowd at the arena. Team White came back from 2 two-goal deficits during the match to tie it up both times before the game went to overtime tied 5-5. A scoreless 10 minute 3 on 3 OT period was followed by a shootout which Team Green won. Justin Trudel, Steven Orzel, Miguel Duchaine and Arnaud Durandeau (SO winner) were among the scorers for the winners while Xavier Parent (2), Zachary Byard and Raphael Lavoie put the puck in the net for White.

The second game of the day ended close as well but started with White dominating most of the match. 16 year old 2018 draft pick Ethan Phillips, who has been a billet brother to Nico Hischier and Filip Zadina, had a hat trick before Green could even get on the board. Coach Eric Vielleux put Phillips, Raphael Lavoie and 2018 import draft Marcel Barinka on the same line and the three of them had all 5 goals to lead their team to a 5-4 victory. Joel Bishop, Arnaud Durandeau and recently acquired forward Jordan Mahar scored for Team Green.

The 47 players in camp will battle against each other again tomorrow for two more intrasqaud games at 9am and 4pm.

Your Mooseheads are set to take on the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles Sunday afternoon in preseason action at Centre 200. Puck drop is at 4pm.

Main camp got underway early Monday morning with all players reporting at 7:30am. The boys were split into two groups with one wearing white jerseys, the other sporting red for the intrasquad games. Normally Halifax does red & green scrimmages.

Game one began at 10am in front of a good crowd at Cole Harbour Place. Team Red came back from being a goal down in the third to win the game 4-3. 18 year old free agent invite Nick Cullen had two goals for the winners while Brett Crossley and rookie Ian McPhee scored for Team White.

In game 2 yesterday afternoon, Team White took a commanding 6-0 lead after forty minutes before winning the match 7-4. 16 year old 2016 draft pick Justin Barron had two assists for the winners while Patty Kyte, a free agent signing, and first year player Caleb Rich scored for Team Red.

The last match of the series was this morning where Team Red came back from being down two goals to tie the game at 4 goals a piece though they eventually lost in a shootout. Second year player Joel Bishop had two goals as well as the shoot out winner, Benoit Olivier Groulx also scored in the shoot out for White while Cullen and sophomore Raphael Lavoie scored for Team Red.

Your Mooseheads are set to take on the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles tomorrow night in preseason action at The East Hants Sportsplex. Puck drop is at 7pm.

Red Wins Intra-Squad Series

Team Red will skate away from this first week of training camp with a intra-squad series victory after beating Team Green 2-1 this afternoon at Cole Harbour Place.

Red now has a 2-0 'series' lead and the last game is tomorrow afternoon at 4pm, same place. It was a very intense physical game. The players are definitely trying to show the coaching staff that they deserve to be here. Sophomore Brett Crossley scored the opening goal for Green then Tristan Tardif tied the game in the first period. 2014 draft pick Gabriel Vanier potted the winning goal with less than 6 minutes left in the second period.

Team Red takes Game 1

Red/Green Intrasquad game face-off

Newly acquired Jakov Novak didn't take long to prove to the Mooseheads management they made the right decision claiming him off waivers on Monday. It still doesn't mean he will make the final roster but he certainly made a good case in the first of 3 intrasquad games this evening at Cole Harbour Place. The Riverside, Ontario native had two goals in a losing cause as his Team Green went down 3-4 to Team Red on Wednesday.

Barrett Dachyshyn, who was recently invited to camp, got Red on the board late in the 1st period which gave them a 1-0 lead. Gabriel Vanier, a 2014 7th round draft pick by the Herd, scored 1:06 into the middle frame giving Team Red a 2-0 lead. Returning players Jordan King and Vincent Watt scored the other goals for Red. Overager Kelly Bent scored in the middle frame to close the gap to 2-1.

Camp continues tomorrow morning with team practices while a second intrasquad game will be held at the same time and same place.

Team Red takes it

Team Red has taken the training camp intrasquad game series with a 3-2 shootout win.

Ryan Falkenham seems to have taken over the scoring from Jonathan Drouin scoring his third goal of the camp, giving Red a 2-1 lead. Sam Leblanc also seems to be taking the helm scoring his second of the series and helping on Falkenham's goal. Jody Sullivan and Luca Ciampini scored for the Green team. Apparently Caven Fitzgerald is quite good at the shootout, he scored a very nice goal on Wednesday according to the Mooseheads Twitter account. The Herd account also had this to say today regarding Fitzgerald;

Good luck to all players going into this weekend. The first cuts are most likely going to be on Sunday after the coaching staff sees the rookies play this weekend.

Halifax will open it's preseason schedule tomorrow afternoon when they take on Cape Breton at the Forum at 4pm.

Red ties up series

Ryan Falkenham scored two goals to help Team Red tie up the intrasquad game series at one game a piece in a 5-4 win.

Switzerland rookie Timo Meier played his first game in Mooseheads colors scoring the first goal of the game. Team Green scored two more goals (Brendan Duke & Jordan King) to spread themselves after Team Red tied it with a goal from Darcy Ashley. Red came storming back with goals from Falkenham, Nikolaj Ehlers and Connor Moynihan. Erik Brown tied it for the Green team. Ryan Falkenham than scored the winner to make the final 5-4.

This game was played like a regular game, 3 period of 20 minutes each. The last of the 3 games will be played tomorrow, same place same time.

Green takes Game 1

Luca Ciampini had the game winner in a 5-3 overtime team green win on Wednesday afternoon.

Sam Leblanc started things off taking a feed from Jean-Sebastien Taillefer. That put Team Red up 1-0 which didn't last long. Team Green tied it up before the end of the first period with a goal from veteran Andrew Ryan. Neither team were able to spread themselves from the other. Rookie Jordan King scored Green's second goal in a row before overager Darcy Ashley tied it up at 2. Team Red then took the lead once again on a goal from Liam Alcalde. Green tied it with 16 seconds left. This ended the game tied and heading to a 10 minute non sudden death overtime. Ciampini scored to put the Green team ahead. Import rookie Nikolaj Ehlers was unable to score on a penalty shot. Green then scored an empty netter.

Austyn Hardie, Brendan Duke, Trey Lewis and Timo Meier did not dress for the game this afternoon and neither did Zach Fucale. Meier was given the day to rest after playing in the U18 Ivan Hlinka tournament last week. Fucale will be arriving at camp on Saturday so I'm not really sure why they listed him on the Red-Green team rosters.

The teams will be back on the ice tomorrow morning at nine and the second intrasquad game will be in the afternoon at 4pm once again at Cole Harbour Place.
