Tight Game for Rebuild Moose

The momentum that Halifax gained by defeating a strong Quebec Remparts team less than a week ago on the road was flattened on Friday night. The Mooseheads were defeated 3-1 by the visiting Blainville-Boisbraind Armada in front of almost 7,600 fans. Both teams played a pretty back and forth game in the opening period with Herd goaltender Jacob Steinman making some nice saves to give the home team an opportunity to get the first goal. We had a scoreless tie going into the second period however, which is when the fun began. Mateo Nobert got the Armada on the board just 53 seconds into the middle frame to make the game 1-0 but Brady Schultz tied the game a few minutes later.  Even though the Mooseheads are a rebuilding team, they have not been laying down during most games this season and it seems to be frustrating their opponents. We saw it tonight with the Armada taking some unnecessary penalties & the guys on the ice doing some post-whistle activities. Halifax found themselves down 2-1 after 40 minutes and just couldn’t get an opportunity in the final period to tie the game up before the bad guys would seal the game with an empty net goal.

Halifax Make Big Trade

The Halifax Mooseheads made a big trade on Monday, picking up 20-year-old Josh Lawrence from the Blainville Armada. In exchange, the Herd let go of two draft picks; a 2023 second rounder and 1st round selection in 2024. Lawrence, a native of Fredericton, NB, has played strong so far this season scoring 32 points in 25 games with the Armada. The overager had a career best 101 points in 2021-22, helping the Saint John Sea Dogs to a Memorial Cup.

“We are very pleased to add someone of Josh's caliber to our already talented lineup. He brings elite level offense and valuable experience that will help our club tremendously this season,'' Russell said in the team's press release

I would like to welcome Josh to Moose Country! Looking forward to next Thursday when the Moose will be back home to take on Blainville.

DUMAIS SIGNS ELC
Congratulations are in order to forward Jordan Dumais who signed a 3-year entry level contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets over the weekend. Dumais was selected by the Jackets in June 96th overall after putting up 109 points last season. The 18-year-old may surpass that number this year as he already has 54 points in 24 games. He leads the Canadian Hockey League in scoring and some have said that his play so far could get him on a spot on Canada’s world Junior team during the holiday break.

Other news and notes..

  • Zachary L’Heureux made his season debut this past Friday where he picked up a goal and an assist.
  • Talking about the World Juniors, we know at least one Mooseheads player that will be participating as captain Attilio Biasca was named to Team Switzerland today for the tournament.
  • Here’s a crazy stat according to the NHL website, the New Jersey Devils are 17-0-0-0 this season when former Herd Nico Hischier records at least a point.
  • Arenas in Antigonish and Truro will get a pre-tournament game each in a few weeks while the Scotiabank Centre will host 4 matches
  • Nobody cares probably but on Nov. 19 I got to watch Moose alumni Brad Marchand play live where he picked up 3 assists in a 6-1 Bruins win. Here’s a picture from that night (sorry it’s blurry, I was far away & using my phone camera)

Game Day 21: vs. Blainville-Boisbriand

PREVIEW
- Our Halifax Mooseheads are back at it and will welcome the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada this evening as the club hosts 90's night. The Herd for one game will turn into the Halifax Citadels, who were an American Hockey League team from 1988-1993, and will wear throwback jerseys to celebrate the former professional team. Both Halifax and Blainville have the exact same record coming into tonight's match while they each have three players on the Central Scouting's November Players to Watch list so we should be in for a good game. The Armada are coming off a victory on Friday night as well and will be hoping to continue their three game win streak going. Goaltending is the biggest difference between these two clubs as the Mooseheads have Mathis Rousseau and Brady James in the top 10 for save percentage while the Armada's Charles-Edward Gravel is 31st in the league.

Seventh Heaven

The longest win streak of the season just got longer as our Halifax Mooseheads defeated the visiting Blainville-Boisbriand Armada on Sunday afternoon. It was the Mooseheads seventh straight victory and the boys still had some scoring in them after Saturday’s thumping. Alex Gravel picked up his 4th shutout of 2018-19 as Halifax won by a score of 4-0. Ben Higgins got the Scotiabank Centre going at the 11:21 mark in the first period, scoring his 8th of the season. Blainville-Boisbriand was looking to leave the Maritimes with a clean sweep of victories but Gravel put a kibosh to that as he stopped all 22 shots he faced en-route to being named the first star. Despite really outshooting them the whole game, it was pretty tight with the Armada defense blocking a number of shots and getting in the way of the players on the home team. The match was also physical with multiple full line scrums, a few of which led to fights. Halifax couldn’t even celebrate their victory right away as Keith Getson got taken down at the buzzer by Alexander Katerinakis. With about 3 minutes, the Armada decided to pull their goaltender trying to get back in the game but it was a little too late and Walter Flower scored in the empty net to clinch the match for the Herd.

Your Halifax Mooseheads welcome the last Quebec team to the Scotiabank Centre this afternoon as they host the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada today at 3pm, the remaining 4 home games will be against division rivals. The Mooseheads continued to roll last night agains Saint John scoring the most goals they have this season with 11 and will be hoping to take down the 15th place Armada. The two teams met towards the end of November with Blainville picking up the victory so Halifax will look to get some revenge. Halifax has done well on home ice and have given the Moose Country faithful a lot to cheer for and some exciting tight games. Blainville has won two in a row on this Maritime road trip but will be playing their third game in 3 days. The Armada are led by their captain and 20 year old Alexander Katerankis who has had a career year in 2018-19 so look out for him today. Halifax spread out the scoring love on Saturday evening as leading scorer Samuel Asselin didn’t even pick up a goal however his line mates Raphael Lavoie and Antoine Morand potted two and a single, respectively.

League Final Set

It’s that time of year again when two teams play for the title of league champion. After a dominating season that saw the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada pick up 50 wins and be a top the QMJHL regular season standings no one is surprised that the club is in the finals while Acadie-Bathurt Titan really aren't a surprise either to be in this series.

The Halifax Mooseheads had a former player in the final four but was eliminated last week. Mathieu Charlebois and the Victoriaville Tigres were kicked out of the playoffs by Bathurst in four games on Wednesday evening. In the other series, Blainville had a tougher time to get through the third round defeating the Charlottetown Islanders in 7 games with their three loses being in overtime.

So the Armada and Titan will fight for the chance to represent the QMJHL in the 2018 Memorial Cup. For Blainville-Boisbriand, this is the second trip to the fourth round of the playoffs in consecutive years. For Acadie Bathurst, it is their fourth trip to the finals in their franchise history.

Non-Call Loses Moose the Game

A non-call in the overtime period was the deciding factor in the Halifax Mooseheads game against the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada on Sunday evening. Less than a minute into extra time, Anthony Poulin put a rebound into a partial empty net to get the win for the away team seconds after the referees decided not to call a penalty for too many men on Blainville. The Armada had control of the puck while they were about to change players which the whole Mooseheads bench were screaming was too many men and while it was initially called a penalty by linesman Chris Ivanko, the other black & white stripes overturned his call. Arnaud Durandeau got the home team on the board first, a little over 9 minutes into the 1st period scoring a goal on the power play. Two minutes later Blainville tied it up on the power play. It was back and fourth in the second period and Durandeau put the good guys in front again close to the end of the frame. In the third it was an exciting period with lots of chances, pretty good saves and five goals.

After a three game road trip, your Halifax Mooseheads are back home for Friday night hockey. They will have a tough test tonight as they take on the second place Blainville-Boisbriand Armada. The armada have been on top of the league for most of the season so far but were overtaken this week by the very hot Saint John Sea Dogs. Blainville is still a tough opponent though and Halifax will be looking to prove they can hang with the best teams in the league. The Mooseheads have the 2nd star of the week on their team in goaltender Alexis Gravel. Despite being only 16 years old, the Abestos, QC native is amount the league leaders for goals against average and save percentage. Centre d'Excellence Sports Rousseau (3,100) ~ Boisbriand, QC

The Halifax Mooseheads are still looking for their first win on the road. Halifax has started the season 0-4 away from the Scotiabank Centre but they're a young team so to even be in the top half of the league standings is pretty good. The Herd are heading to Boisbriand today to take on the Armada who are pretty good at home in their own right, they have a 3-0-0-1 record at the Centre d'Excellence Sports Rousseau. For the second straight night, Halifax will be a part of a pink in the rink event that is not theirs as Blainville is hosting the annual event this evening. Despite being the youngest team in the league, there have been promising lights to start the season. Veteran Maxime Fortier is once again the team leader in points, five of the remaining 6 player rookies (Raphael Lavoie has left the team) have at least a point while three of them have goals and goaltender Alexis Gravel has a 2.45 goals against average in 146 minutes of action. Today's game is the second of a 3 games in 3 nights Quebec road trip for the Moose and they're going up against some good teams. Blainville has won a lot of tight games and have scored the third lowest amount of goals but they haven't given up too many either. Will our boys get their first road win today? We'll have to wait and see.

This is the first meeting between the two teams this season. Last year, Halifax was 1-1-0-0 against the Armada while Blainville had a 1-0-1-0 record versus the Mooseheads. The last matchup in the 2015-16 season was October 8, 2015. Timo Meier had 2 goals and four points including the game winner to lead Halifax to a 5-4 overtime victory while Eric Brassard made 21 saves to pick up the win.

OVERALL RECORDS
Mooseheads: 5-4-0-0 = 10 points (3rd in Maritimes ivision, 7th overall)
Armada: 5-3-0-1 = 11 points (3rd in West division, 6th overall)

What A Comeback

Down two goals twice during the game, your Halifax Mooseheads used the return of Timo Meier to get their second win of the season. The Mooseheads couldn't make their passes and gave the puck up quite a bit in the first period and at the end of the 20 minutes found themselves down 0-2. Meier, who turned 19 today, took the first penalty of the game and Halifax suffered because of it as the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada took a 1-0 lead. Sanche scored again 4 minutes later to give the Armada a strangle hold on the game. Or so it looked like, a delay of game penalty at the beginning of the second period and a 5 on 3 shifted the momentum to the Mooseheads big time. Cavan Fitzgerald scored on the 5 on 3 to close the gap, than Arnaud Durandeau had his second tally of the season on the powerplay to tie the game. Before the middle frame ended though, the momentum was back in Blainville's corner with the Armada securing a two goal lead again. The birthday boy got the ball rolling in the third scoring 56 seconds in to the frame before Danny Moynihan tied the game once again, this time at 4-4. In overtime, with a 4-on-3 powerplay situation, Halifax took full advantage and Meier had the magic play to win the game for the home team.

Timo Meier is set to make is home debut as captain of your Halifax Mooseheads. After getting injured in his first game after being returned by the San Jose Sharks, Meier is back in the lineup tonight when the Herd host the Armada. The two teams met in Boisbriand five days ago with the home team in that contest coming out with the win. Halifax will be looking for a bit of revenge after a 4-2 defeat on the weekend. The Mooseheads should get some added offence with Timo back in the lineup which will hopefully help with scoring and winning.

Scotiabank Centre (10,595) ~ Halifax, NS

It's time to say goodbye. What is happening tonight normally doesn't happen in junior hockey. When a player gets traded they just go right to their new team and start playing. However, the Mooseheads franchise goaltender Zach Fucale requested coming back for one more game to say his goodbyes to the fans. After winning the gold medal on Monday, Fucale came back to Halifax to pack up his belongings and have a couple of last days with his billet parents. The Herd announced earlier this week that Zach would be back at the Scotiabank Centre tonight to drop the ceremonial puck. It'll be an exciting time for everyone in attendance but the current team will have to push all that excitement down after the real puck drop and get back to business. They'll be going up against the hottest team of late in the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada. Luckily Coach Ducharme has a fully healthy lineup for the first time this season and will be able to put out the best team available.

This is the second and final game between these two teams. Halifax is 0-1-0-0 against the Armada this season while Blainville is 1-0-0-0 versus the Mooseheads. The 2 teams met on October 25 last with the Armada skating away for a 2-1 win at home ice. Brandon Vuic scored the lone Herd goal while Zach Fucale made 18 saves.

Overall Records
Armada: 24-11-1-4 = 53 points (1st in West division, 3rd overall)
Mooseheads: 20-18-2-1 = 43 points (3rd in Maritimes division, 11th overall)

Leading Scorers
HFX: Nikolaj Ehlers 51pts (19G & 32A), Timo Meier 50pts (21G & 29A), Danny Moynihan 42pts (20G & 22A)
BLB: Danick Martel 62pts (28G & 34A), Nikita Jevpalovs 57pts (30G & 27A), Philippe Sanche 40pts (23G & 17A)

Last Games
The Aramda are coming off a 4-3 shootout win in Charlottetown on Friday night. Nikita Jevpalovs led the team with a goal and an assist while Samuel Montembeault made 24 saves to get Blainville the victory against the Islanders.

The Mooseheads are coming off a big win against Gatineau at home last night. Halifax was led by Nikolaj Ehlers who scored a hat trick and had an assist in the 6-3 victory while Eric Brassard took the decision against the Olympiques.

RECAP: Another Close Game

BLAINVILLE - It was another close game between the Halifax Mooseheads and the Blainville-Boisbriand and yet again your Mooseheads were on the wrong side of it. Halifax had lots of chances to win the game but it was a goaltending duel that only one team came out on top of. Brandon Vuic was the only Herd player to score on Saturday evening. Halifax is still looking for the first 2 game win streak,

Halifax's first road trip to Quebec has started off well but the Mooseheads will need to continue the confidence that they had last night if they want to get a passing grade on the trip. They'll be up against a team that has a ton of confidence as the Armada are on a 5 game win streak after a bad start to the season.

This is the first game of the season between these two teams. Blainville-Boisbriand beat the Herd in both games last season but the games were really close, both ending in a 4-3 score.

Overall Records
Mooseheads: 5-7-1-1 = 12 points (5th in Maritimes division, 15th overall)

POSTGAME: Armada 4, Mooseheads 3

MC POST-GAME
Streak stays in tack with shorthanded goal by Blainville

HALIFAX - Looks like another team will be the first one to give the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada their first loss.

The Canadian Press' recap: Frederic Bergeron scored once and set up two more as Blainville-Boisbriand edged the Mooseheads.

Metro Halifax's recap: Just when it appeared the Halifax Mooseheads were poised for a comeback win, things fell apart.

The Q News' recap: Luca Ciampini netted his first goal of the season in a losing cause Friday Night.

Chronicle Herald's recap: The No. 1 ranked team in the CHL came to Halifax on Friday and the Mooseheads nearly knocked them off.

halifaxmooseheads.ca's recap: That hurts.

MISSING IN ACTION: Trey Lewis (labral tear) and Jonathan Drouin (groin) were not in the lineup while healthy scratches were Liam Alcalde, Jesse Lussier and Vincent Watt. The Armada didn't dress Emil Aronsson, Marc-Olivier Roy, Tyler Brown and David Bedard.

TWEET OF THE NIGHT

PICTURES
Here are my pictures from last night.

COMEBACK
The comeback fell just short. Midway through the third the Herd were down 3-1 but they got two goals in a little over 2 minutes to tie things up.

CAPTAINCY
With captain Trey Lewis out with a hip injury, Darcy Ashley was the captain last night. Brent Andrew will also be captain while Lewis is out.

CIAMPINI
Luca Ciampini scored his first goal of the season last night.

FALKENHAM
Local boy Ryan Falkenham scored the tying goal on a vey nice play. He got 2nd star honors.

WEEGAR
MacKenzie Weegar assisted on two of the three goals yesterday evening. Mac seemed to be on the ice every time I looked so I'm not surprised that he got points last night. He was the third star of the game.

OTHER SCORES
Cap Breton 3 -2 Charlottetown
Bathurst 0 - 3 Qubec
Sherbrooke 1 - 4 Rouyn-Noranda
Victoriaville 3 - 0 Shawinigan
Drummondville 4 - 6 Val-d'Or

UP NEXT
Halifax will take on the Saint John Sea Dogs tonight at home. Puck drops at 7pm.

Tough Loss.

Looks like another team will be the first one to give the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada their first loss. The Moncton Wildcats were unable to Thursday night losing 4-0 while the Halifax Mooseheads were also unable to but they gave the Armada hard fought game. Both teams changed chances in the first period but neither could get past the goaltenders. After going down 2-0 half way though the second and the crowd being deflated, the Mooseheads got a goal by Luca Ciampini to liven it up. Halifax than came back to tie it after bring down 3 to 1 with goals by Andrew Ryan and a very nice one by Ryan Falkenham. There were plenty of missed powerplay opportunities as well. A shorthanded goal was the dagger that allowed the Armada to remain perfect this year.

IT'S GAMEDAY
HALIFAX MOOSEHEADS vs. BLAINVILLE-BOISBRIAND ARMADA
Puck drops at 7:00pm
Metro Centre (10,595) ~ Halifax, NS

PREVIEW - Undefeated. Going into the tonight's game that is all anybody will be thinking about. The 3rd year Blainville-Boisbriand Armada are coming into town as the number one ranked team in the country with a 9-0 record. Your Halifax Mooseheads will look to stop that streak and prove that they are not part of the champiosnhip curse that seems to plaque lots of championship teams in the year after winning the trophy. The Armada are the only truly undefeated team right now in the Canadian Hockey League.

Halifax will have some help however as Darcy Ashley, who was third in team scoring alst season, is returning to the lineup after being out since the middle of training camp with a broken hand. It will also be the home debut for 3rd overall draft pick Jonathan Drouin. Drouin was reassigned to the Moose by the Tampa Bay Lightning a day after Halifax's last home game and has played 4 road games collecting 5 points. Drouin collected 56 of his 105 points on home ice last season so he should help the team score more on this 6 game homestand. Ashley will also be a big boost, he had 26 goals and 78 points last year.

This is the first of two games between Blainville and the Mooseheads. They will meet agian in February.

THE NUMBERS

Blainville-Boisbriand continued their streak last night against the Moncton Wildcats, shuting out the Cats 4-0. Frederic Bergeron led the team in points with 2 goals as Etienne Marcoux stopped all 22 pucks he faced for the shutout.
