CAMP: Mooseheads release 3

The Halifax Mooseheads announced this morning the releasing of three more players as the team gets ready for main camp.

A surprise to many I'm sure, the Herd cut 2014 draft pick Gabriel Vanier who had a strong couple of days at camp but was relegated to the 4th line during the HubCity Showcase rookie tournament this past weekend. Halifax also released Marc-Olivier Gilbert, a 2015 draftee, and William Smith who was selected in the 11th round this past June. Smith was hurt in the first game of the tournament this weekend.

Good luck to the boys with their respective teams this season.

Rookie camp is over but it ended on a good note. Your Halifax Mooseheads skated to a 4-3 shootout victory to end the first ever HubCity Showcase on Sunday evening and it gave the team the championship trophy. Halifax found themselves down 2-0 to the host Moncton Wildcats before 2016 draft pick Raphael Lavoie scored with a minute and 25 seconds left in the first period to close the gap. After a scoreless second period, 18 year old Gabriel Vanier scored 8 minutes in the third period to tie the game. Lavoie scored his second of the game with less than 8 minutes left but the Wildcats tied it with 2:02 left to send the game to overtime. Extra time solved nothing so the two teams went to a shootout where Lavoie and Jared McIsaac scored for the Moose and Mike Cyr was the only one to get a goal past goalie Alex Gravel.

Herd in Championship Game at HubCity

After winning the first two games of their pre-season, your Halifax Mooseheads will play in the championship game at the HubCity Showcase. The Mooseheads improved to 2-0 on Saturday afternoon in a game against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. Ilya Putintsev, a sophomore, had a goal and assist to help lead the Herd to a 4-2 victory over the Titan. Kirklin Allen started the game for Halifax while Raphael Blais played the last 40 minutes.

Halifax will now play the Moncton Wildcats in the last game of the rookie tournament to decide the champion of the rookie tournament. Game time is 4pm today.

Good Start at Rookie Tournament

It didn't start very good but the first pre-season game of the 2016-17 Halifax Mooseheads year ended well. The Saint John Sea Dogs got on the board first just 38 seconds in to the match with a goal by Cedric Pare but that would be the only goal 2nd round draft pick Alexis Gravel would let in as the Mooseheads went on to win the game 4-1. For Halifax it was a mix of young veterans and rookies leading the way on the score sheet. 2016 second overall selection Jared McIsaac tied the game for the Herd early in the second period while sophomore Ilya Putintsev scored the go ahead goal less than a minute later. Sea Dogs goaltender Alex D'Orio played the whole game while Kirklin Allen came in for the third period for the Moose.

CAMP: Roster trimmed before rookie tournament

This morning your Halifax Mooseheads announced that the following ten players have left training camp voluntarily. It includes a few free agent invites and 4 2016 draft picks.

This leaves 27 players in training camp before the veterans arrive on Monday. The rest of the players will now head to Moncton for the first ever Hub City Showcase, with the Mooseheads opening up the tournament this afternoon at 4pm versus the Saint John Sea Dogs.

Red/Green rosters announced

Your Halifax Mooseheads announced today who will play in week 1's intrasquad games today. The roster includes 35 young gentlemen all born between 1998 and 2000. Some current Mooseheads are going to be participating in this week's camp while there is also a couple free agent invites. Halifax is anticipated to make their first cuts Sunday evening or Monday morning. The team announced that the official roster for the HubCity Showcase will be released later this week.



The intrasquad games are Wednesday evening 3-5pm and Thursday at 10am-noon and 4-6pm. It's important to note that seating is limited as the games will be played on the Scotia 2 ice surface in Cole Harbour Place. Practices and intrasquad games are free and open to the public.

Halifax's 2016 CHL import draft pick Nico Hischier will report to camp on August 21st while the rest of the veterans will arrive a day later.

CAMP: Rookies to arrive Tuesday

A new season is almost upon us and nothing is more evident to that than your Halifax Mooseheads releasing their training camp schedule today. The team announced this afternoon that rookies will be arriving on Tuesday with registration and medicals taken place that afternoon. Halifax's camp will be different than recent years with the addition of the HubCity Showcase for maritime teams. There will still be intrasquad games in the first week of camp and the first cuts are expected to be made before veterans report on August 22.
