Mooseheads at NHL camps

Many Halifax Mooseheads will be at NHL rookie camps starting this week. Most notably are the boys who played on the top line last season; Nathan MacKinnon, Jonathan Drouin and Marty Frk. Here are the boys, current and former Herd players, who are at rookie camps and where and what they will be doing. I'll keep you updated on how they do.

FRK
Now that Martin Frk has aged out of the juniors, he will look to make the team that drafted him 2 years ago in 2012; the Detroit Red Wings. In the NHL.com's 30 in 30, Frk was listed as the Red Wings 7th best prospect.  The NHL.com had this to say:
The Czech Republic native had a brilliant 2012-13 season with the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in which he tallied 84 points in 56 games and has the look of a future NHL power forward.
Every year, Detroit has a tournament with other teams in the NHL in Traverse City, Michigan. Marty will be one of 4 draft picks from the last four years who are in the tournament for the Wings. For a full roster click here. The tournament will feature 7 other teams; Dallas, Buffalo, Carolina, Minnesota, Columbus, St. Louis and the New York Rangers. It will begin on Wednesday and go until Monday September 9th. Frk and Detroit will play a game on Sept. 5th (vs. Minnesota), Sept. 6th (vs. Dallas) and Sept.9th (vs. St. Louis). Practices are open to the public free of charge while games are $10 per day.

RYAN
Andrew Ryan has been invited to Phildelphia Flyers' rookie camp. The camp will start on September 6th and will end on the 9th. Practices will be held at The Virtua Center Flyers Skate Zone from September 6-8. There will than be a rookie game against the Washington Capitals' rookies on the 9th in Arlington, Virginia at 3pm. For the full roster of draftees and invitees click here.

MURPHY
Matt Murphy will also be in Traverse City this week as an invitee of the St. Louis Blues. The standings and roster for the Blues can be found here. Murphy will battle against his former teammate on Sunday for the last round robin game. They will also play the Stars on Thursday and the Wild on Friday.

DROUIN
Jonathan Drouin will begin rookie camp with the other Tampa Bay Lightning rookies on September 4th. The 4 team six game tournament in Coral Springs will include the Bolts, the Florida Panthers, Nashville Predators and Boston Bruins. On September 4th, the Lightning will open their camp and practice on Thursday at Times Forum before starting the tournament on Friday. Tampa Bay plays Nashville on Friday, followed by Boston on Saturday and the first battle of Florida on Sunday. Admission is free to games but fans must pre-register and bring a ticket with them.

FUCALE
Well Zach Fucale is not having much of a summer this year. After helping the Mooseheads to the Memorial Cup at the end of May, Fucale was invited to Team Canada's goaltender camp in the middle of June, than drafted 36th overall in the NHL draft by the Montreal Canadiens on June 30th. At the beginning of August, he was invited to Team Canada's World Juniors camp and played in one of the pre-tournament games in Lake Placid. Finally he has been in the Mooseheads training camp. He will once again be back on the ice come Thursday when the Canadiens prospects camp gets underway in Brossard, QC. For the full roster click here.

MACAULAY
Despite being drafted in 2010 by the St. Louis Blues, Stephen MacAulay finds himself on a camp roster with Fucale and not Murphy. He is going to be in camp on an American Hockey League contract trying to make the big team instead of the medium one. It's possible that MacAulay will play a couple of games in the NHL and than be sent down to the Hamilton Bulldogs in the AHL.

WEEGAR
Mackenzie Weegar will join Drouin in Sunrise, Florida with the Panthers for prospects camp. The Cats will play Friday vs. Boston, Saturday vs. Nashville and Sunday vs. Tampa Bay. Florida's training camp begins Wednesday though with medical and physical testing being held at the BB&T Center that day. For full list of prospects click here.

FOURNIER
Stefan Fournier will join Fucale and MacAulay in Brossard this week. He has been invited to the camp as a free agent. If he doesn't make the Habs roster he will most likely be sent down to the Bulldogs as he is to old now for juniors. For full information about the camp click here.

MACKINNON
Nathan MacKinnon will start in the Colorado Avalanche rookie camp on September 8th. It will last until the 10th. Practices during rookie camp will be open to the public free of charge. Here is the full roster for training camp.

ABELTSHUASER
Konrad Abeltshauser will be in British Columbia this week playing with San Jose Sharks' rookies in the Young Stars Classic held by the Vancouver Canucks. A full roster can be found here. The Sharks and Canucks will also be joined by the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers and Winnipeg Jets. The tournament starts September 5th to September 9th. San Jose will play against the Canucks on Thursday, the Jets on Friday and the Flames on Sept. 8th. Find the full schedule here.

Wild Night.

HALIFAX - The first period was a little boring but in the middle frame it got a little chippy and a lot more exciting. Halifax scored 3 goals in the second 20 minutes to take a 3-2 lead after two periods. Both Moynihan brothers scored in the middle frame. Considering half of both teams were rookies, they got the rivalry going already. There was about 3 fights during the game with one being after the buzzer went to signal the end of the game. All ten players got into it with a few players getting penalties from the fight.

King retires

Former Halifax Mooseheads player Jason King has retired from playing hockey.

The Winnipeg Jets announced that he has been hired as the assistant coach of their affiliate St. John's IceCaps. King retired this morning after playing the last two season in the American Hockey League with the IceCaps in his home province.

King played 3 seasons with the Mooseheads between 1999 and 2002. In his rookie season, he recorded only 10 points in 53 games but improved to 89 points (72 games) and 99 points (61 games) in the next two seasons respectively. He was than drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in the NHL in 2002 and split his time between the 'Nucks and the Manitoba Moose in the next 2 seasons.

Here's the press release.

Camp down to 27

The Halifax Mooseheads 2013 training camp roster is now down to 27 players. Brennan Bailey, who played 14 games with the team last season, was cut this morning.

According to the team they will keep 24 players on their roster which seems like too many to me, I believe that there is normally 22 players on a team. The reason they are keeping 24 is probably incase players get injured. The Halifax Metro had an article today saying that the Moose are going to cut one forward and two defensemen before they have their final roster, that would bring the roster down to 25. It will be interesting to see if one of the 3 expected cuts will be an overager or if that last cut to get it from 25 to 24 will be the overager. Brent Andrews, Trey Lewis, Brendan Duke and Darcy Ashley are the 20 year olds on the team, and each team can only have 3.

Bailey could play as an overager next season (2014-15) or it is possible for him to get called up at some point this year during the regular season or playoffs. In the 14 games he played last year, he recorded one goal and one assist. It is not specified what team he will play for now.

The Herd continue the preseason tonight at the Forum versus Cape Breton at 7pm. Look at the roster here.

Season Ticket pick up Wednesday

Press release.

The Halifax Mooseheads announced today that there will be a Season Ticket and 15-game packs holder pick up event again this year.

Fans who bought season tickets and 15 game packs can pick them up in the Metro Centre lobby on Wednesday September 4th from 6-8pm. The Mooseheads also announced that during the event, fans can meet the players and get autographs as well as take pictures of the two Cups they won back in May. With winning the Memorial Cup as national champs, the Halifax players received a championship ring. The team announced that each fan who bought a season ticket or 15 game pack will receive a replica version of the ring. If you purchased more then one seat don't worry you will get a ring per seat.

Halifax also announced that they will for sure raise a banner for both championships in a pre-game ceremony before the home opener on September 12th. The first 8,000 fans will get a commemorative banner poster to mark the event.

The Herd will also be wearing a special 20th anniversary jersey at different times throughtout the season. The jersey will be revealed on September 28th during the President's Cup finals rematch game versus the Baie-Comeau Drakkar.

I was wondering if Halifax was going to do this after I saw the Portland Winterhawks ring from when they won the WHL championship. A very nice thing for them to do and it is such an awesome way for the Mooseheads and the city to kick of their 20th season. The final roster than must be going to be announced sometime this weekend or early next week after the team battles provincial rivals Cape Breton on Friday night (look for my preview tomorrow).

JUST TWO WEEKS UNTIL THE HOME OPENER!! Exciting stuff happening in Halifax.
